Positioning Head Assembly For Data Storage System With Multiple Degrees Of Freedom

View page
US Patent:
7342738, Mar 11, 2008
Filed:
Oct 20, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/584019
Inventors:
James S. Anderson - Hugo MN, US
Todd W. Abrahamson - Woodbury MN, US
Saeed A. Fahimi - Bloomington MN, US
Richard E. Jewett - Minneapolis MN, US
Christopher A. Merton - Hammond WI, US
Joseph Skorjanec - White Bear Lake MN, US
Assignee:
Imation Corp. - Oakdale MN
International Classification:
G11B 5/584
US Classification:
360 7712
Abstract:
The Invention Provides a Positioning System for a Linear Data Storage Medium, Such as magnetic tape or other data storage medium in which data is stored on parallel data tracks that extend along a length of the medium. The invention makes use of multiple actuators to control the positioning of sliders carrying read and write elements, e. g. , separate sliders carrying the read and write elements, relative to the data storage medium with multiple degrees of freedom. The multiple degrees of freedom may include two or more of a vertical position, a horizontal position, a transverse position, an azimuth position, a zenith position, and a yaw position. In this manner, the invention can improve head-to-track alignment of read heads and write heads with linear data storage systems having very small track pitches, such as track pitches approximately 1 micron and especially less than 1 micron.

Sputtered Metal Film Recording Medium Including Texture Promotion Layer

View page
US Patent:
20090274932, Nov 5, 2009
Filed:
May 2, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/150980
Inventors:
Mallika Kamarajugadda - Eden Prairie MN, US
Jixiong Han - Woodbury MN, US
Joseph Skorjanec - White Bear Lake MN, US
International Classification:
G11B 5/66
B05D 5/12
US Classification:
4288312, 427129
Abstract:
A sputtered metal film recording medium includes a substrate, a texture promotion layer sputtered on a first side of the substrate, a seed layer deposited on the texture promotion layer, an intermediate layer including a chromium alloy deposited on the seed layer, and a longitudinal magnetic recording layer including a cobalt alloy deposited on the intermediate layer. The texture promotion layer configures in-plane orientation of a cobalt structure in the magnetic recording layer.

Dual-Input, Automatic-Switching Power Supply

View page
US Patent:
61377066, Oct 24, 2000
Filed:
Feb 19, 2000
Appl. No.:
9/507451
Inventors:
Curt G. Nesbitt - Sioux Falls SD
Joseph B. Skorjanec - Garretson SD
Michael B. Pulizzi - Hartford SD
Assignee:
Pulizzi Engineering Inc - Santa Ana CA
International Classification:
H02M 110
US Classification:
363142
Abstract:
A dual-input, automatic-switching power supply comprises a primary power input, a secondary power input, and a power output. Included are first and second DPST mechanical relays and a third DPDT mechanical relay. A first relay input is connected to the primary power input and a corresponding first relay output is connected to a third relay input. A second relay input is connected to the secondary power input and a corresponding second relay output is connected to a different third relay input. The third relay output is connected to the power output. The relays in combination provide a relay moving contact gap spacing, source to source, of at least three millimeters. A first under voltage control module maintains the first and third relays in states causing the primary power input to be connected to the power output as long as voltage from the primary power input remains above a preestablished primary voltage dropout level. A second under voltage control module maintains the second relay in a state causing the secondary power input to be connected to the second input pin of the third relay as long as voltage from the secondary power input remains above a preestablished secondary voltage dropout level. A flip-flop is used to automatically switch the third relay to a state causing the primary power input to be disconnected from, and the secondary power input to be connected to the power output when the primary power input voltage drops below the primary voltage dropout level.

Abstract:
The present invention relates to a photographic film base comprising a transparent support base and a binderless layer of magnetic material coated thereon. According to another aspect, the present invention relates to a color photographic material comprising a photographic film base and at least one light-sensitive layer coated thereon, wherein said photographic film base comprises a transparent support base and a binderless layer of magnetic material coated thereon.

Metallic Thin Film Magnetic Recording Medium Having A Hard Protective Layer

View page
US Patent:
47299240, Mar 8, 1988
Filed:
Dec 21, 1984
Appl. No.:
6/684735
Inventors:
Joseph Skorjanec - White Bear Lake MN
Carmen D. Moe - North St. Paul MN
Assignee:
Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company - St. Paul MN
International Classification:
G11B 572
US Classification:
428422
Abstract:
A metallic, thin film, magnetic recording medium is disclosed wherein the surface of the metallic thin film is modified such as to promote improved adhesion with protective lubricant. A process is disclosed wherein, for example, controlled oxidation of a metallic, thin film magnetic recording medium yields a homogeneous distribution of bonding sites and wherein application of a protective lubricant (e. g. , perfluoropolyether compositions) provides a recording medium exhibiting superior wear and abrasion resistance.

Reactive Sputtering Process For Recording Media

View page
US Patent:
48031305, Feb 7, 1989
Filed:
Aug 20, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/087260
Inventors:
Joseph Skorjanec - White Bear Lake MN
Carmen D. Moe - North St. Paul MN
Assignee:
Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company - St. Paul MN
International Classification:
G11B 564
US Classification:
2041922
Abstract:
A method of mixing ferromagnetic recording media comprising the steps of: (i) coating a non-magnetic substrate material with a magnetic layer comprising Co-Cr by sputtering; (ii) after sufficient thickness built-up, introducing a gas (hydrocarbon, N. sub. 2, NH. sub. 3, or O. sub. 2) into sputtering process to deposit a layer of Co and Cr reaction products under the following conditions: (a) film growth at least 50 Angstroms per minute; and (b) fully reacting Co and Cr wtih gas introduced; (iii) coating reactively sputtered layer with lubricant. Reactively sputtered layer promotes improved adhesion of lubricant to recording media.
