In a non-volatile memory system, when it is discovered that the voltage pump pulse provided by a charge pump for programming the memory cells does not match a reference voltage, the programming time period of the voltage pump pulse is adjusted to a value that remains substantially unchanged until the end of the programming cycle. In this manner, the fluctuation in the effective programming time period of the programming pulses is prevented for the remainder of the programming cycle so that a broadening of the threshold voltage distribution will not occur or will be reduced. This feature allows a short programming time period to be designated for the programming pulses for enhanced performance, while allowing the flexibility of increased program time period when the charge pump is operating under conditions that causes it to be slow and/or weak.

Abstract:
A method of decoding a turbo product code (TPC) code word comprises performing a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) on each of a plurality of code blocks of the TPC code word. The bits of code blocks of the TPC code word which pass the CRC are assigned an artificially high probability confidence measure, such as an artificially high log-likelihood ratio. Assigning these bits an artificially high probability confidence measure allows an iterative process, between a soft decision algorithm and a TPC decoder, to be less complex and to converge on a correct decoding solution more quickly. Apparatus for implementing the method are also provided.

Abstract:
This disclosure provides an improved system for culturing human pluripotent stem cells. Traditionally, pluripotent stem cells are cultured on a layer of mouse embryonic fibroblast feeder cells to prevent them from differentiating. In the system described here, the role of feeder cells is replaced by defined components added to the culture environment that support rapid proliferation without differentiation. The medium contains an isotonic buffer, a blend of essential nutrients such as protein and lipids, and an effective growth factor or combination of factors that promote proliferation while inhibiting differentiation. Culturing human embryonic stem cells in fresh medium on an extracellular matrix according to this invention causes the cells to expand surprisingly rapidly, while retaining the ability to differentiate into cells representing all three embryonic germ layers. This new culture system allows for bulk proliferation of pPS cells for commercial production of important products for use in drug screening and human therapy.

Abstract:
An upscaling method for efficiently simulating a geological model of subsurface reservoir is disclosed. The method includes providing a fine-scale geological model of a subsurface reservoir associated with a fine-scale grid and a coarse-scale grid. Time-dependent fluid flow solutions, such as fluxes and saturations, are computed for the coarse-scale grid cells. The coarse-scale fluid flow solutions are distributed onto local fine-scale boundaries to obtain local fine-scale boundary conditions. Fine-scale cell fluid flow solutions are computed within the local fine-scale boundaries using the local fine-scale boundary conditions. Two-phase upscaling functions are computed with the fine-scale cell fluid flow solutions and are output to produce a display of fluid flow within the subsurface reservoir.
