Public wireless communications will increasingly extend into wireless LAN (WLAN) environments in order to meet the ubiquitous access, high data rate, and local services demands of future Internet appliances. By relying on IP-level services mechanisms, the Public Access Mobility LAN (PAMLAN) can simultaneously support different air interfaces, franchises for multiple services providers, and a multi-segment LAN environment including handoffs. The PAMLAN supports virtual operator LANs representing different network services providers, authorization and accounting mechanism, support of multiple air interfaces, and local IP mobility. A router associated with each base station realizes this highly distributed IP networking environment, and a QoS-enabled switched Ethernet core supports virtual networks and QoS services.

Mobile users access the Internet and local network services at hot spots such as airports, hotels, coffee shops and vacation resorts. The mobile users' Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are used as the single point of contact for all authentication, accounting, and authorization (AAA) transactions. AAA transactions for such ISPs acting as “virtual operators” are handled according to a system entirely based on IP. Converging both the AAA process and data transmission at the IP layer works across multiple air interfaces and is interoperable with wireless LAN cards from different vendors.

The method for providing micro-billing for internet services includes establishing a micro-billing agent (MBA) within a user's access point (i.e., Internet Service Provider—ISP). The MBA contains the user's billing information and keeps that information exclusive to the MBA. By retaining the user's information with their access point, the user can conduct more secure online transactions, particularly for low cost transactions, without the inconvenience of inputting or transferring personal purchasing information to the online store. According to one aspect, the purchase page may be previously encoded with a micro-billing option which would enable the MBA to obtain user authorizations in online transactions in a more streamlined and secure manner.

Mobility in a wireless ATM network is accomplished by use of hand-off control protocols. A mobile terminal signals a first base station that a hand-off is to occur. In a first preferred embodiment the first base station signals a second base station requesting a hand-off. After the second base station signals the first base station that a datapath link is available from a hand-off switch to the second base station, the hand-off switch causes the datapath to change from the first base station to the second base station and the first base station signals the mobile terminal to commence communication with the second base station. In a second preferred embodiment, the mobile terminal signals a first base station that a hand-off is to occur. The first base station signals a second base station requesting a hand-off. At the same time a datapath link is established between the first and second base stations.

Aspects of the present disclosure are directed to implementations involving the transmission of radar signals and the processing of reflections of those signals as received from a target. As may be implemented with one or more embodiments, a spectrogram may be produced by converting reflections, of transmitted radar signals from a target, into a time-frequency domain using a time-frequency analysis. One or more suppression thresholds is determined for at least one frequency signal in the spectrogram, based on frequency characteristics of the converted reflections. A range response is constructed, characterizing the target and having interference signals removed in the time-frequency domain, by converting (into the range response) selected ones of the frequency signals in the spectrogram having a magnitude within the suppression threshold.
