Coupling System To A Microsphere Cavity

View page
US Patent:
6389197, May 14, 2002
Filed:
Feb 10, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/501824
Inventors:
Vladimir Iltchenko - La Canada CA
Lute Maleki - Pasadena CA
Steve Yao - Diamond Bar CA
Chi Wu - San Marino CA
Assignee:
California Institute of Technology - Pasadena CA
International Classification:
G02B 626
US Classification:
385 28, 385 30, 385 37, 372 9
Abstract:
A system of coupling optical energy in a waveguide mode, into a resonator that operates in a whispering gallery mode. A first part of the operation uses a fiber in its waveguide mode to couple information into a resonator e. g. a microsphere. The fiber is cleaved at an angle which causes total internal reflection within the fiber. The energy in the fiber then forms an evanescent field and a microsphere is placed in the area of the evanescent field. If the microsphere resonance is resonant with energy in the fiber, then the information in the fiber is effectively transferred to the microsphere.

Formation Of A Surface On An Optical Component

View page
US Patent:
6563997, May 13, 2003
Filed:
Nov 28, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/723757
Inventors:
Chi Wu - San Marino CA
Xiaoming Yin - Pasadena CA
Assignee:
Lighteross, Inc. - Monterey Park CA
International Classification:
G02B 610
US Classification:
385130, 385129, 385131, 385132, 385 14, 438 31, 438 29, 438 69
Abstract:
A method of forming a reflecting surface on an optical component is disclosed. The method includes forming a first mask so as to protect a ridge region of a light transmitting medium. The ridge region is a region where a ridge of a waveguide will be formed. The method also includes performing a first etch of the light transmitting medium so as to form a side of the ridge. The first mask defines a profile of the side of the ridge during the first etch. The method further includes performing a second etch of the light transmitting medium so as to form the reflecting surface. The first mask defines a profile of the reflecting surface during the second etch.

Formation Of Optical Components On A Substrate

View page
US Patent:
6596185, Jul 22, 2003
Filed:
Feb 16, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/785565
Inventors:
Wenhua Lin - Pasadena CA
Chi Wu - San Marino CA
Assignee:
Lightcross, Inc. - Montesey Park CA
International Classification:
B29D 1100
US Classification:
216 24, 438462, 216 41
Abstract:
A method of separating optical components is disclosed. The method includes obtaining a substrate structure having a plurality of optical components formed on the substrate structure. The method also includes performing a separation etch on a separation region of the substrate structure. The separation region is selected such that separating the substrate structure at the separation region separates at least one of the optical components from the other optical components.

US Patent:
6792180, Sep 14, 2004
Filed:
Mar 19, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/101481
Inventors:
Chi Wu - San Marino CA
Assignee:
Kotura, Inc. - Monterey Park CA
International Classification:
G02B 634
US Classification:
385 37, 385140
Abstract:
The optical component includes an array of array waveguides. The optical component also includes a first light distributing component configured to distribute a first light signal to the array waveguide. The first light signal is distributed such that a fraction of the first light signal enters each array waveguide as a light signal fraction. The optical component also includes a second light distribution component configured to received the light signal fractions from the array waveguides. The light signal fractions are received so they combine to from a second light signal with a periodic intensity distribution.

Assembly For Mounting Electronic Components, Methods Of Use And Manufacture Thereof

View page
US Patent:
8439615, May 14, 2013
Filed:
Jul 26, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/828467
Inventors:
Chi H. Wu - Quincy MA, US
Liu C. Lei - ZhaBei Dist., CN
Thomas J. Socci - Fairport NY, US
Douglas Nobbs - Dover NH, US
George R. Watchko - Stoneham MA, US
Assignee:
Parker-Hannifin Corporation - Cleveland OH
International Classification:
F16B 35/04
US Classification:
411107, 411999
Abstract:
An assembly for mounting electronic components includes a face plate comprising a thermoplastic material. The face plate includes a retaining element for securing a captive screw and spring assembly for mounting an electronic printed circuit board. The retaining element includes one or more slots adapted to expand the element to permit insertion of the screw and deformation of the hole upon insertion of the screw, while locking the screw to retain the screw in place. This arrangement permits the elimination of the metal standoff frequently used in similar devices. Methods for preparing the assembly and mounting the printed circuit boards are also described.

Chi Wu - San Marino CA, US
Wenhua Lin - Pasadena CA, US
Assignee:
Kotura, Inc. - Monterey Park CA
International Classification:
B29D 11/00
US Classification:
216 24
Abstract:
A method of forming an optical component on a substrate structure includes forming a ridge in a light transmitting medium positioned on a base. The ridge includes a waveguide region configured to propagate light signals and a flange region extending across a longitudinal axis of the waveguide region. The method also includes removing at least a portion of the flange region so as to expose a facet aligned with the waveguide region such that light signals propagated along the waveguide region are transmitted through the facet.
