Device With Thermoelectric Cooling

View page
US Patent:
6987650, Jan 17, 2006
Filed:
May 22, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/443358
Inventors:
Yue Liu - Fremont CA, US
Kochan Ju - Monte Sereno CA, US
Julie Chen - Fremont CA, US
Assignee:
Headway Technologies, Inc. - Milpitas CA
International Classification:
G11B 5/39
F25B 21/02
F25D 23/12
H01L 35/28
US Classification:
360313, 360324, 136203, 136204, 62 37, 622592
Abstract:
Increasing the output signal from CPP GMR devices by increasing the read current has not previously been considered an option because it would make the device run too hot. This problem has been overcome by using, for the upper and lower leads, materials that differ significantly in their thermoelectric powers. Thus, when DC is passed through the device, from − to + TEP leads, hot and cold junctions are formed and heat is transferred from the micro-device into the leads, resulting in a net local cooling of the device which enables it to operate at higher power. For a GMR device, this translates to a larger output voltage, making it easier, more sensitive, and more reliable to use.

Supplementary Shield For Cpp Gmr Read Head

View page
US Patent:
7075758, Jul 11, 2006
Filed:
Sep 8, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/657504
Inventors:
Kunliang Zhang - Fremont CA, US
Kochan Ju - Monte Sereno CA, US
Min Li - Fremont CA, US
Youfeng Zheng - San Jose CA, US
Simon Liao - Fremont CA, US
Yue Liu - Fremont CA, US
Assignee:
Headway Technologies, Inc. - Milpitas CA
International Classification:
G11B 5/39
US Classification:
360319
Abstract:
Increases in the AP and AP thickness cause the free layer to be off-center in a CPP magnetic read head. This problem has been overcome by inserting supplementary magnetic shields within the spin valve, located as close as possible to the stack. These supplementary shields enable the read gap width to be reduced by about 430 Å and the free layer to shift back towards the center by about 30 Å.

Inventors:
Kunliang Zhang - Fremont CA, US
Min Li - Dublin CA, US
Rachid Sbiaa - Nagano, JP
Simon Liao - Fremont CA, US
Yue Liu - Fremont CA, US
Assignee:
Headway Technologies, Inc. - Milpitas CA
International Classification:
G11B 5/39
US Classification:
4288112, 4288115, 428812, 36032411, 36032412
Abstract:
A current-perpendicular-to-plane (CPP) giant magnetoresistive (GMR) sensor of the synthetic spin valve type and its method of formation are disclosed, the sensor including a novel laminated free layer having ultra-thin (less than 3 angstroms thickness) laminas of FeCo(or any iron rich alloy of the form CoFewith x between 0. 25 and 0. 75) interspersed with thicker layers of CoFeand Cu spacer layers to produce a free layer with good coercivity, a coefficient of magnetostriction that can be varied between positive and negative values and a high GMR ratio, due to enhancement of the bulk scattering coefficient by the laminas. The configuration of the lamina and layers in periodic groupings allow the coefficient of magnetostriction to be finely adjusted and the coercivity and GMR ratio to be optimized. The sensor performance can be further improved by including layers of Cu and FeCoin the synthetic antiferromagnetic pinned layer.
