Continuously Variable Four-Wheel Drive Transmission With Traction Control

View page
US Patent:
6402652, Jun 11, 2002
Filed:
Oct 11, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/686562
Inventors:
Yakov Fleytman - Orion MI
Charles E. Beyer - Rochester MI
Philip J. Francis - Lapeer MI
Assignee:
New Venture Gear, Inc. - Troy MI
International Classification:
F16H 372
US Classification:
475 5, 475 7, 475150, 150248
Abstract:
A four-wheel drive transmission is provided which combines a continuously variable transmission unit and a transfer case into a common assembly. The four-wheel drive transmission includes a continuously variable transmission unit, a continuously variable range unit and a torque transfer unit. Variable speed control of a first worm/worm gear transmission drives a component of an epicyclic gearset associated with the continuously variable transmission unit to provide continuous ratio control between an input shaft and an intermediate shaft. Likewise, variable speed control of a second worm/worm gear transmission drives a component of a differential associated with the continuously variable range unit to provide continuous ratio control between the intermediate shaft and a first output shaft. Finally, the torque transfer unit controls the selective/automatic transfer of drive torque from one of the intermediate shaft and the first output shaft to a second output shaft to provide front-wheel drive.

Variable Ratio Range Set For A Transfer Case

US Patent:
6447418, Sep 10, 2002
Filed:
Oct 10, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/685790
Inventors:
Yakov Fleytman - Orion MI
Assignee:
New Venture Gear, Inc. - Troy MI
International Classification:
F16H 372
US Classification:
475 7, 74425
Abstract:
A range shift arrangement is disclosed for shifting a gear reduction unit between a low-range operating speed and a high-range operating speed, or any speed range in-between. This arrangement is particularly adapted for use in vehicle power transfer devices, such as four-wheel drive transfer cases, for allowing the operator to shift âon-the-move:â between a low-range drive mode and a high-range drive mode, or any range therebetween. In the preferred embodiment, the gear reduction unit includes a first component driven by the input shaft, a second component driving the output shaft, and a third component driven by a worm gearset. The worm gearset includes a worm gear fixed to the third component and a worm meshed with the worm gear. A variable speed motor is operable to drive the worm so as to vary the rotary speed of the third component, thereby varying the speed ratio between the input and output shafts.

Worm Drive Axle Traction Assembly

US Patent:
6464032, Oct 15, 2002
Filed:
Oct 13, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/687176
Inventors:
Yakov Fleytman - Orion MI
Assignee:
New Venture Gear, Inc. - Troy MI
International Classification:
B60K 17354
US Classification:
180245, 74425, 74650, 192 49
Abstract:
A traction drive axle is provided for providing an all-wheel drive operating mode. The traction drive axle includes a unique double enveloping worm/worm gear transmission. A worm is driven by a propshaft which is meshingly engaged with an enveloping worm gear. The enveloping worm gear is selectively coupled via first and second clutches to left and right axle shafts. A control system is provided for controlling actuation of the first and second clutches upon detection of relative rotation between the left and right axle shafts.

US Patent:
6514167, Feb 4, 2003
Filed:
Oct 10, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/685402
Inventors:
Yakov Fleytman - Orion MI
Charles E. Beyer - Rochester MI
Philip J. Francis - Lapeer MI
Assignee:
New Venture Gear, Inc. - Troy MI
International Classification:
F16H 3708
US Classification:
475201, 475 5, 475150, 475204, 475212
Abstract:
A four-wheel drive transmission is provided which combines a continuously variable transmission unit and a transfer case into a common assembly. The four-wheel drive transmission includes a continuously variable transmission unit, a drive selector unit and a torque transfer unit. Variable speed control of a worm/worm gear transmission drives a component of a differential associated with the continuously variable transmission unit to provide continuous ratio control between an input shaft and an intermediate shaft. The drive selector units establishes forward and reverse drive connections between the intermediate shaft and a first output shaft. Finally, the torque transfer unit controls the selective/automatic transfer of drive torque from the first output shaft to a second output shaft to provide four-wheel drive operation.

Power Take-Off Unit With Gearset

US Patent:
6523430, Feb 25, 2003
Filed:
Oct 13, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/687134
Inventors:
Yakov Fleytman - Orion MI
Assignee:
New Venture Gear, Inc. - Troy MI
International Classification:
B60K 1734
US Classification:
74425, 74665 T, 180233
Abstract:
A power take-off unit for a transaxle is provided with a unique double enveloping worm/worm gear transmission which has a ratio of the number of gear teeth on the worm gear to the number of threads on the worm which is low. The worm/worm gear transmission is more compact than conventional bevel gear systems which have typically been used in power take-off unit applications. The worm and worm gear transmission of the present invention also is quieter in operation and has a higher torque capacity than standard bevel gears of comparable size.
