Roll Of Product Having Parallel Display Strips Thereon

View page
US Patent:
6840391, Jan 11, 2005
Filed:
Nov 11, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/291918
Inventors:
Thomas R. Miller - South Haven MI, US
William J. Hale - Stevensville MI, US
Assignee:
Tower Tag & Label LLC - St. Joseph MI
International Classification:
A47F 508
US Classification:
211113, 211 592, 2421604
Abstract:
A display strip for packages includes an elongated backing member and transverse adhesive strips that extend completely across the backing member for adheringly holding individual packages. A plurality of the display strips are adhered transversely to a roll of release paper in a side-by-side arrangement. This allows the adhesive strips to form a substantially continuous strip of adhesive running parallel the length of the roll, and also allows the display strips to be presented one by one as the roll is unwound a short distance equal to a width of the display strips. Due to the short distance of the roll as it is unwound, the display strips are easily removed one at a time off an end of the roll.

Identity Verification Apparatus And Method

View page
US Patent:
43085229, Dec 29, 1981
Filed:
Mar 19, 1979
Appl. No.:
6/021851
Inventors:
Bruno J. Paganini - Centerville OH
Jeram G. Advani - Miami FL
Robert M. Whitely - Dayton OH
William J. Hale - Dayton OH
Assignee:
NCR Corporation - Dayton OH
International Classification:
G06K 952
US Classification:
3401463SY
Abstract:
A method and apparatus are provided for verifying the identity of a person by establishing and storing a standard vector for said person based upon predetermined characteristics derived from a number of handwriting samples, and then comparing said standard with a vector derived from a corresponding sample of handwriting provided by said person at the time the identity of said person is to be verified. Derivation of the vector is accomplished by digitizing an analog waveform representing forces generated by writing, compressing the digitized information, extracting Haar coefficients and directly observable features from the compressed digital information, and deriving a vector from said Haar coefficients and said directly observable features.

Optical Identification System And Reader For Reading Optical Gratings On A Record Medium

View page
US Patent:
40230104, May 10, 1977
Filed:
Sep 8, 1975
Appl. No.:
5/611378
Inventors:
William R. Horst - Dayton OH
Charles F. Mort - Xenia OH
William J. Hale - Kettering OH
Assignee:
NCR Corporation - Dayton OH
International Classification:
G06K 714
G06K 1906
G11C 1144
G02B 518
US Classification:
235 6111E
Abstract:
An optical identification system including a reader for reading superimposed optical gratings on a record medium in which the reader has a grating plane and a radiant energy source for directing energy therefrom along an optical axis to the grating plane. Detectors are positioned in the reader to receive diffracted beams from the optical gratings on a record medium positioned at the grating plane. The reader also includes an optical imaging system having a concave lens for directing a zero order reflected beam which is displaced from the optical axis back to the grating plane to enable the resulting beams diffracted from the optical gratings to be received at the detectors whenever a record medium is displaced slightly from the grating plane.

Bidirectional Optical Data Communications System

View page
US Patent:
49412051, Jul 10, 1990
Filed:
Jul 11, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/217509
Inventors:
William R. Horst - Dayton OH
William J. Hale - Dayton OH
Assignee:
NCR Corporation - Dayton OH
International Classification:
H04B 1010
US Classification:
455605
Abstract:
A system and method are disclosed for optically communicating data between two data handling units where one of the data units supplies all of the optical power needed for the optical communications between the two data units. In a preferred embodiment a first data unit comprises a first data source, first and second optical sources of optical energy, and a first optical detector, while a second data unit comprises a second data source, a second optical detector and an optical modulator. In a first mode of operation, a first stream of digital data from the first data source pulse modulates the first optical source on and off causing the first optical source to transmit optical pulses to the second optical detector. These optical pulses are converted by the second optical detector back into a representation of the first stream of digital data for use by the second data unit. In a second mode of operation unmodulated optical energy is transmitted from the second optical source in the first data unit to the optical modulator in the second data unit.

System And Method For Providing A Security Check On A Credit Card

View page
US Patent:
40342115, Jul 5, 1977
Filed:
Jun 20, 1975
Appl. No.:
5/588937
Inventors:
William R. Horst - Dayton OH
William J. Hale - Kettering OH
Assignee:
NCR Corporation - Dayton OH
International Classification:
G06K 1906
G06K 714
G02B 518
G06K 1908
US Classification:
235 6112N
Abstract:
A system and method for providing a security check on a credit card. The credit card has first data recorded thereon in the form of optical gratings to provide for card uniqueness and second data recorded thereon in a magnetic track also located on the card. The optical gratings on the card cannot be reproduced by "skimming" or without destroying the card itself. When the magnetic track is recorded by a bank issuing the card, some reference to the first data on the card is included and encrypted on the magnetic track by the bank's encrypting hardware so as to eliminate fraudulent duplication or use of the card. The first data, which is unique to the card, is compared with selected portions of the encrypted second data to provide a security check to determine the validity of the card being used. The optical gratings are embossed on an aluminized plastic strip which is sandwiched between plastic sheets in the credit card to form a non-separable and tamperproof card structure.
