Dynamic Setting Of Breakpoint Count Attributes

View page
US Patent:
7047519, May 16, 2006
Filed:
Sep 26, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/964237
Inventors:
Cary Lee Bates - Rochester MN, US
Paul Reuben Day - Rochester MN, US
Victor John Gettler - Lexington KY, US
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F 9/44
G06F 11/07
US Classification:
717129, 717131, 714 34
Abstract:
Apparatus, methods and articles of manufacture are provided for tracking breakpoint hits. In one embodiment, a hit count is automatically incremented for each breakpoint. The hit count is stored for subsequent runs, thereby allowing a user to specify a breakpoint encounter number, N, to which a program may execute and then stop. Illustratively, each breakpoint encounter may have been automatically tracked prior to the user's specification of N. In another embodiment, a range in which the breakpoint is located is specified. The hit count is incremented for each encounter of the breakpoint in the range and reset each time the range is entered.

Implementing Enhanced Compiled Breakpoint Analysis

View page
US Patent:
7552425, Jun 23, 2009
Filed:
Aug 19, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/921591
Inventors:
Cary Lee Bates - Rochester MN, US
Victor John Gettler - Lexington KY, US
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F 9/44
G06F 11/00
US Classification:
717129, 717130, 717131, 714 35
Abstract:
Compiled breakpoint analysis includes a debugger user interface that is displayed for defining breakpoint properties. Responsive to a predefined user selection, a conditional breakpoint and condition are exported to be compiled for debug. When a source module is compiled for debug, the conditional breakpoint is inserted into the program executable for a user-selected line. When debugging the program executable, the compiled conditional breakpoint is identified. A compiled breakpoint table is used to set a conditional breakpoint on the user-selected line and to identify statement numbers for the true and false legs of a compiled condition.

Thread Swap Visual Indication

View page
US Patent:
8141046, Mar 20, 2012
Filed:
Oct 9, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/869099
Inventors:
Cary Lee Bates - Rochester MN, US
Victor John Gettler - Lexington KY, US
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F 9/44
US Classification:
717125, 717129, 717131
Abstract:
A computer implemented method, apparatus, and computer usable program code for indicating thread swaps. A code is presented on a graphical user interface. A portion of the code is executed. A determination is made as to whether a change from an initial thread to a current thread occurred when execution of the portion of the code stops at a line of code in the portion of the code. A graphical indication is displayed identifying a thread swap in the graphical user interface in association with the line of code in which the thread swap occurred.

Monitoring Changes To Data Within A Critical Section Of A Threaded Program

View page
US Patent:
8572577, Oct 29, 2013
Filed:
Jun 20, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/143101
Inventors:
Cary L. Bates - Rochester MN, US
Victor J. Gettler - Lexington KY, US
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F 9/44
US Classification:
717129, 717124, 717127
Abstract:
A method, system and program product for monitoring changes to a variable within a critical section of a threaded program. The method includes establishing, using a debugging tool, a watch for monitoring changes to a variable that occur outside of the critical section and executing a portion of the threaded program with a debugger. Further, the method includes determining, using the tool, whether or not a thread has executed a start breakpoint set for the critical section, if the thread has executed the start breakpoint set, determining whether or not the thread has executed an end breakpoint set for the critical section, and if the thread has not executed the end breakpoint set, displaying any watches triggered responsive to updates to the variable that occur outside of the critical section, such that, only updates to the variable that occur outside of the critical section will trigger the displaying.

Method And Apparatus For Profile Enhanced Source Code Analyzer Results

View page
US Patent:
20090044177, Feb 12, 2009
Filed:
Aug 9, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/836573
Inventors:
Cary Lee Bates - Rochester MN, US
Victor John Gettler - Lexington KY, US
International Classification:
G06F 9/44
US Classification:
717131
Abstract:
A computer implemented method, apparatus, and computer program product for generating enhanced source code analyzer results. The process receives a plurality of results generated by a static code analysis for a computer program. Profile data associated with the computer program is received. A priority for each result in the plurality of results is identified to form prioritized results. A prioritized static analysis report is generated using the prioritized results. The prioritized static analysis report indicates the priority for each result in the plurality of results.

Uninitialized Memory Watch

View page
US Patent:
6634020, Oct 14, 2003
Filed:
Mar 24, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/535344
Inventors:
Cary Lee Bates - Rochester MN
Victor John Gettler - Lexington KY
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F 944
US Classification:
717131, 717124, 717127, 717129, 717130, 712227
Abstract:
In the present invention, a special purpose watch function is used to find reference to uninitialized memory within a computer program during debugging. The uninitialized memory watch may be implemented singularly with respect to a given memory allocation or as a watchpoint wherein a watch is set on a memory space for each instance of a memory allocation during execution of a program. At the point where this watch is set, the program assumes that the memory targeted is uninitialized. When storage to the target memory is made, the watch function marks that segment of memory as initialized and permits continued program execution. Upon detecting a reference to the memory, a determination is made as to whether the watched memory space is initialized.
