Abstract:
In one embodiment, the present invention relates to a method of treating a cancer characterized by inhibition of Fas-mediated apoptosis, comprising administering to a patient suffering from the cancer a pharmaceutically-effective amount of a composition comprising a peptide that competitively antagonizes at least one protein-Fas binding selected from the group consisting of herpes virus 8 protein K1 binding to Fas, CD74 binding to Fas, and pi 00 binding to Fas. In a further embodiment, the peptide is selected from the group consisting of peptides having from about 15 to about 35 amino acid residues and comprising at least a portion of the immunoglobulin domain of K1, peptides having from about 15 to about 35 amino acid residues and comprising at least fifteen consecutive amino acid residues among positions 50-120 of CD74, LVTLLLAGQ ATT A YFL YQQQ, LYQQQGRLDKLTVTSQNLQL, QNLQLENLRMKLPKPPKPVS, and PKPVSKMRMATPLLMQALPM. In another embodiment, the present invention relates to a method of treating a disease characterized by unwanted apoptosis in a mammal, comprising transfecting a cell of the mammal with a nucleic acid molecule encoding CD74. The present invention also relates to the compositions referred to above and their use in manufacture of medicaments for treatment of the diseases described herein.

A pump control system and a torque control valve are disclosed. In one embodiment, the torque control valve includes a sleeve, a spool disposed in the sleeve, and a piston rod disposed through the spool. The spool has a first recess area, a second recess area, and a third recess area. The first and third recess areas each have a port extending into a central bore of the spool. The piston rod includes a groove orifice feature having a spiral groove and is configured such that a fluid flowing from the port in the first recess area to the port in the third recess area must flow through at least a portion of the spiral groove. The fluid flowing through the spiral groove operates to bias the spool in a direction towards the second axial end of the spool.

Abstract:
Disclosed herein is a bio-based copolymer comprising in polymerized form (i) at least one polymerizable bio-based monomer containing one phenolic hydroxyl group which has been derivatized to provide at least one polymerizable functional group which is an ethylenically unsaturated functional group (such as a [meth]acrylate group), where the precursors of the polymerizable bio-based monomers are derived from raw lignin-containing biomass, and (ii) at least one ion-conducting co-monomer other than the bio-based monomer. Abstract:
A calibration system and method for a spark ignition engine of a vehicle involve artificially weighting engine dynamometer data in high engine load regions and using it to generate training data for an artificial neutral network (ANN). A plurality of ANNs are trained using the training data and the plurality of ANNs are then filtered based on their maximum error to obtain a filtered set of trained ANNs. A statistical analysis is performed on each of the filtered set of trained ANNs including determining a set of statistical metrics for each of the filtered set of trained ANNs and then one of the filtered set of trained ANNs having a best combination of error at high engine loads and the set of statistical error metrics is then selected. Finally, an ANN calibration is generated using the selected one of the filtered set of trained ANNs.

Abstract:
Engine low pressure cooled exhaust gas recirculation (LPCEGR) control techniques comprise receiving a measured position of an accelerator pedal and, based on this measurement, detecting a transient tip-out event or a transient tip-in event. In response to detecting the transient tip-out event, an EGR depletion rate is temporarily increased by at least one of (i) downstream throttle valve control to maintain at least a minimum engine airflow or to regulate a rate of decrease of the airflow into the engine, (ii) cylinder bank fuel shutoff, and (iii) pre-scheduled EGR valve control based on the measured accelerator pedal position. In response to detecting the transient tip-in event, an EGR delivery rate is temporarily increased by at least one of (i) the pre-scheduled EGR valve control and (ii) controlling intake/exhaust valves of cylinders of the engine to enable a scavenging mode.
