Multipurpose Intense Pulsed Light System

View page
US Patent:
20100179521, Jul 15, 2010
Filed:
Jan 13, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/686904
Inventors:
Shahriar Ghaffari - Austin TX, US
International Classification:
A61B 18/18
US Classification:
606 9
Abstract:
Apparatus and methods disclosed herein operate to produce high peak power light output, to deliver the light output to a portion of skin in a dermatological setting, to deliver a flow of cool gas or air to the skin for cooling purposes, to monitor skin temperature during the delivery of light to the portion of skin, and to adjust the light power in real time such as to enhance the tradeoff between treatment efficacy and skin damage.

Optical System For Treatment Of Vascular Lesions

View page
US Patent:
RE36634, Mar 28, 2000
Filed:
Sep 5, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/711685
Inventors:
Shahriar Ghaffari - Austin TX
International Classification:
A61N 506
US Classification:
606 9
Abstract:
An improved optical system for treatment of disorders of the skin, especially vascular lesions, such as Port Wine Stains. The system irradiates the skin with radiation at a predetermined wavelength and cools the skin during a predetermined time interval in coordination with delivery of the radiation. The absorption of the radiation by the skin and the change in temperature of the skin is monitored by the system and the operation of the radiation delivery system is controlled to optimize treatment of the vascular lesion. The source of irradiation is an arc lamp and the cooling system delivers a cooling gas to a lens in contact with the skin. The cooling gas can be carbon dioxide, freon, or any other appropriate gas. The lens used has a high heat conductivity and may be formed of sapphire.

Conventional Light-Pumped High Power System For Medical Applications

View page
US Patent:
57698449, Jun 23, 1998
Filed:
Jun 7, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/480537
Inventors:
Shahriar Ghaffari - Austin TX
International Classification:
A61B 1736
US Classification:
606 16
Abstract:
An optical system which utilizes a conventional light source to produce a narrowly focused beam of radiation having intensity similar to that produced by a laser. The system broadly includes an omnidirectional light source and an elliptical reflector, wherein the physical parameters of the light source and the reflector are matched to produce a narrowly focused beam of intense radiation. The light produced by the system is coupled into a fiber optic system for delivery to the target area. In one embodiment, a mirrored surface having an aperture therein is placed at a point near the second focal point of the reflector. The aperture is positioned such that only rays meeting predetermined geometrical exit criteria can pass through the aperture and be accepted by the fiber optic located at the second focal point. Those rays which do not meet the exit criteria are reflected by the mirrored surface toward the interior of the cavity. Some of the reflected rays provide additional amplification of the light produced by the light source and the course of these rays is altered such that they are eventually able to meet the exit criteria and pass through the aperture.
