Microporous Structure Defined By A Multiplicity Of Singular Channels And Method Of Making

View page
US Patent:
6357484, Mar 19, 2002
Filed:
Aug 30, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/385163
Inventors:
Roy V. Semerdjian - Sacramento CA
Assignee:
UOP LLC - Des Plaines IL
International Classification:
F15D 102
US Classification:
138 44, 138115, 138116
Abstract:
A microporous structure can be formed from ductile material such as glass into an axially extended outer wall surrounding a plurality of singular micro-passages surrounded by the outer wall to provide an open area that extends continuously over the length of the outer wall. The diameter of the micro-passages will usually not exceed 25 m and are more in range of from 0. 5 to 5 m. The structure is particularly useful as frits for the containment of packing in capillaries for chromatograph applications and more generally as flow restrictors. Continuous open diameters of the micro-passages have a relatively straight flow path that reduces pressure drop relative to the random arrangement of other frits while still providing the desired containment.

Bonding Procedure For Silica Assemblies

View page
US Patent:
56537778, Aug 5, 1997
Filed:
Oct 19, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/545492
Inventors:
Roy Vahan Semerdjian - Fair Oaks CA
Assignee:
UOP - Des Plaines IL
International Classification:
C03B 800
US Classification:
65 172
Abstract:
A method for bonding silica containing materials uses a mixture of ultrasonically treated silica powder and a suspension liquid to provide a bonding material. Once applied to the bonding surfaces of silica containing components the mixture is dried and then heated. Upon cooling the mixture provides a solid bonding between the components. The bonding procedure minimizes the mount of localized heating required to bond the material and thereby prevents distortion of silica components as they are bonded.

Round Profile Multi-Capillary Assembly And Method Of Making

View page
US Patent:
61743526, Jan 16, 2001
Filed:
Nov 24, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/198471
Inventors:
Roy V. Semerdjian - Sacramento CA
David A. Le Febre - Camino CA
Assignee:
UOP LLC - Des Plaines IL
International Classification:
B01D 1508
B01D 7104
US Classification:
96 8
Abstract:
A multi-passage capillary arrangement can be formed from ductile glass material into an assembly that has an essentially round outer cross section and multiple capillary passages with diameters of 250 micrometers or less. The multiple capillary assembly provides multiple capillary sized passages of a regularly recurring shape in a single cohesive bundle. The round outer cross section facilitates the use of the multiple capillary by providing a suitable surface for connections. The multiple capillary arrangement can be made by a method that provides uniform or nearly uniform capillary passages throughout the arrangement. The capillaries are useful for chromatograph applications and as flow restrictors.

Compound Capillary Assembly And Use In Separative Transport

View page
US Patent:
63330881, Dec 25, 2001
Filed:
Jan 13, 1999
Appl. No.:
9/231336
Inventors:
David A. Le Febre - Camino CA
Roy V. Semerdjian - Sacramento CA
Thomas B. Martin - Placerville CA
Assignee:
UOP LLC - Des Plaines IL
International Classification:
B22D 2200
B01D 3321
US Classification:
428 3691
Abstract:
A compound capillary can provide different sizes and configurations for central and outer passages to suit a variety of process applications, in particular methods of separative transport of multi-component samples and precise heat control of fluid streams on a micro scale. The compound capillary can be formed from ductile glass material into an assembly that typically provides a central passageway for retaining one fluid or material and single or multiple outer passages for retaining different fluids or materials. One or more of the different passages may also retain one more different stationary phase to tailor the separative transport to the material of particular sample streams. The compound capillary has particular application to the field of capillary electrophoresis where the multiple capillary passages in a single capillary tube may be used to increase sample through, or used for different function such as cooling and/or the establishment of transverse electrical potentials.
