View page
US Patent:
7154346, Dec 26, 2006
Filed:
Jul 30, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/902465
Inventors:
Steven Jaffe - Irvine CA, US
Donald McMullin - Laguna Hills CA, US
Ramon Gomez - San Juan Capistrano CA, US
Assignee:
Broadcom Corporation - Irvine CA
International Classification:
H03L 7/00
H03B 21/00
H03B 27/00
US Classification:
331 18, 331 45, 327105, 327106
Abstract:
An apparatus provides a local oscillator signal based on a selected channel of an RF input signal. For example, the apparatus can set a frequency of the local oscillator signal based on the selected channel. Digital circuitry can be used to generate the local oscillator signal. For instance, the digital circuitry can provide a digital representation of the local oscillator signal. A DAC can convert the digital representation to an analog signal. Other circuitry can provide first and second quadrature components of the local oscillator signal, based on the analog signal.

Integrated Switchless Programmable Attenuator And Low Noise Amplifier

View page
US Patent:
7199664, Apr 3, 2007
Filed:
Dec 27, 2004
Appl. No.:
11/020478
Inventors:
Klaas Bult - Bosch en Duin, NL
Ramon A. Gomez - Fountain Valley CA, US
Assignee:
Broadcom Corporation - Irvine CA
International Classification:
H03G 3/10
US Classification:
330284, 333 81 R, 4552321
Abstract:
An integrated receiver with channel selection and image rejection substantially implemented on a single CMOS integrated circuit is described. A receiver front end provides programable attenuation and a programable gain low noise amplifier. Frequency conversion circuitry advantageously uses LC filters integrated onto the substrate in conjunction with image reject mixers to provide sufficient image frequency rejection. Filter tuning and inductor Q compensation over temperature are performed on chip. The filters utilize multi track spiral inductors. The filters are tuned using local oscillators to tune a substitute filter, and frequency scaling during filter component values to those of the filter being tuned. In conjunction with filtering, frequency planning provides additional image rejection. The advantageous choice of local oscillator signal generation methods on chip is by PLL out of band local oscillation and by direct synthesis for in band local oscillator.

Low Noise Variable Gain Amplifier

View page
US Patent:
7408407, Aug 5, 2008
Filed:
Dec 30, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/321650
Inventors:
Leonard Dauphinee - Irvine CA, US
Ramon A. Gomez - San Juan Capistrano CA, US
Assignee:
Broadcom Corporation - Irvine CA
International Classification:
H03G 3/00
H03G 3/20
US Classification:
330141, 330278
Abstract:
The present invention provides systems and methods for asymmetrically varying gain in a low noise amplifier. The amplifier includes a first stage amplifier, a plurality of second stage amplifiers coupled to the first stage amplifier, a comparator coupled to one of the second stage amplifiers, and a controller coupled to the comparator, the first stage amplifier, and the plurality of second stage amplifiers. The controller is configured to produce one or more gain control signals to change the gain of one of the first stage amplifier or the plurality of second stage amplifiers at a plurality of asymmetric rates so as to cause the power of the output signal to move toward one of the threshold values of the comparator. The rate of change of the gain is based on conditions including the gain of the first stage amplifier, gain of a second stage amplifier, and the sampled power level.

Ramon Alejandro Gomez - San Juan Capistrano CA, US
Francesco Gatta - Laguna Niguel CA, US
Harold Raymond Whitehead - Duluth GA, US
Donald G. McMullin - Laguna Hills CA, US

H04N 7/173
US Classification:
370352, 370401, 375222, 348 E5002, 725118
Abstract:
An apparatus and method is disclosed to calculate the actual received desired channel power from the downstream transmit power of a Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) when operating at the nominal line voltage and/or at the normal room temperature as per the DOCSIS specification. A Set-top Device produces a Downstream Power Management (DPM) gain measurement signal having a known power level. The Set-top Device embeds the DPM gain measurement signal onto a received downstream multi-channel communication signal. After embedding the DPM gain measurement signal onto the downstream multi-channel communication signal, the Set-top Device downconverts the combined DPM gain measurement signal and downstream multi-channel communication signal to recover one or more communication channels containing information of a broadcast. The Set-top Device measures a power level of a representation of the DPM gain measurement signal embedded within the one or more communication channels containing the information of the broadcast to determine a Set-top Device gain. The Set-top Device measures a power level of the one or more communication channels containing the information of the broadcast.
