Fusion Processes For Producing Sheet Glass

View page
US Patent:
20030121287, Jul 3, 2003
Filed:
Dec 20, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/326685
Inventors:
Paul Chalk - Danville KY, US
Philip Fenn - Corning NY, US
International Classification:
C03B017/06
US Classification:
065/090000, 065/053000, 065/195000
Abstract:
Methods are provided for controlling the formation of defects in sheet glass produced by a fusion process which employs a zircon isopipe. The methods comprise controlling the temperature profile of the glass as it passes over the isopipe so as to minimize both the amount of zirconia which diffuses into the glass at the top of the isopipe and the amount of zircon which comes out of solution at the bottom of the isopipe.

Conformable Nosing Device For Reducing Motion And Stress Within A Glass Sheet While Manufacturing The Glass Sheet

View page
US Patent:
20080276646, Nov 13, 2008
Filed:
May 9, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/801213
Inventors:
Paul Gregory Chalk - Danville KY, US
Patrick Jean Pierre Herve - Corning NY, US
Yawei Sun - Horseheads NY, US
Naiyue Zhou - Painted Post NY, US
International Classification:
C03B 8/02
US Classification:
65 172, 65144, 65158, 65174, 65 91, 65 97
Abstract:
A conformable nosing device is described herein which conforms to have a bowed shape that substantially matches a bowed shape of a glass sheet and which engages the glass sheet to help minimize the motion of the glass sheet and to help reduce the stress within the glass sheet while the glass sheet is being scored and separated into individual glass sheets. In addition, the conformable nosing device can include a passive nosing device which can be controlled to further help minimize the motion of the glass sheet while the glass sheet is being scored and separated into individual glass sheets.

Method And Apparatus For Pressure Control Of Glass-Making Thickness-Control Zone

View page
US Patent:
20110126591, Jun 2, 2011
Filed:
Nov 30, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/627212
Inventors:
Paul Gregory Chalk - Danville KY, US
Ahdi El Kahlout - Lexington KY, US
Shawn Rachelle Markham - Harrodsburg KY, US
International Classification:
C03B 15/02
US Classification:
65 84, 65204
Abstract:
Managing pressure within a thickness-control-zone (muffle door) housing () relative to pressures in a glass-making machine enclosure () and an upper chamber ()—that is disposed outside the enclosure—so as to minimize or control undesired airflows that would adversely affect thickness () of glass ribbon (). According to one pressure-management technique, the pressure at a location () in the housing () is managed so as to be less than the pressure at a location () that is within the enclosure () as well as both outside and adjacent to the housing. In the event of a leak, as by a crack or unintended opening in the housing, for example, this pressure difference reduces or prevents airflow toward the ribbon and, thereby, undesired thickness variation in the ribbon. According to a second pressure-management technique, the pressure at location () is managed so as to be greater than the pressure in the upper chamber.
