US Patent:
8557208, Oct 15, 2013
Filed:
May 26, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/472050
Inventors:
Olivia A. Graeve - Alfred NY, US
Raghunath Kanakala - Alfred NY, US
Gabriel Rojas-George - Chihuahua, MX
Assignee:
Board of Regents of the Nevada System of Higher Education, on behalf of the University of Nevada, Reno - Reno NV
International Classification:
C01B 35/00
C01B 35/02
C01B 35/04
US Classification:
423276, 423289, 423263, 423297
Abstract:
One embodiment of the present disclosure provides a method of making a ceramic material that contains boron and a metal. A metal source, an oxidizer, a boron source, and a fuel source are combined. These reactants are then heated at, or to, a temperature sufficient to initiate a combustion reaction. The combustion reaction produces a ceramic material that includes boron and the metal. The present disclosure also provides materials formed by the disclosed method, as well as methods and systems using such materials.

US Patent:
20100092363, Apr 15, 2010
Filed:
Sep 14, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/559018
Inventors:
Olivia A. Graeve - Alfred NY, US
Brett Pearson - Sparks NV, US
James Tinsley - Goleta CA, US
Wilfred Lewis, III - Santa Fe NM, US
International Classification:
C01B 33/20
C01F 17/00
US Classification:
423263, 423326
Abstract:
In various embodiments, the present disclosure provides a silicate material and a method for forming such material. According to a particular embodiment of the method, water is added to reactants including a metal salt, an oxidizer, a silicon source and a fuel source. The reactants and water are heated at a temperature between about 800 C. and about 1200 C. Heating initiates a combustion reaction and produces a nanocrystalline powder. In more particular examples of the method, the nanocrystalline powder is subsequently densified, such as by sintering. The material formed by the method is, in some cases, a lutetium-containing material suitable for use as a scintillator.
