View page
US Patent:
6487903, Dec 3, 2002
Filed:
Apr 24, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/841141
Inventors:
Eugene P. Sabini - Skaneateles NY
Jerome A. Lorenc - Seneca Falls NY
Oakley Henyan - Auburn NY
Kenneth L. Hauenstein - Seneca Falls NY
Assignee:
ITT Manufacturing Enterprises, Inc. - Wilmington DE
International Classification:
G01L 700
US Classification:
73168, 73 171, 417 38, 417 442, 417 443, 417212, 417309
Abstract:
A method and system for determining pump cavitation is disclosed. In accordance with the principle of the invention, changes in dynamic fluid pressure within a pump are monitored and compared to a determined cavitation alarm pressure. The determined cavitation pressure is determined as a known percentage of a known non-cavitation pressure. Fluid cavitation is determined when the change in dynamic fluid pressure falls below the determined cavitation alarm pressure. In a further aspect of the invention, a remaining mechanical seal operational life can be determined by maintaining a total time of fluid cavitation and reducing the expected life by the known operational time of the pump and the time the pump is in cavitation.

Method For Determining Pump Flow Rates Using Motor Torque Measurements

View page
US Patent:
6591697, Jul 15, 2003
Filed:
Apr 11, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/832760
Inventors:
Oakley Henyan - Auburn NY, 13021
International Classification:
G01F 128
US Classification:
7386171
Abstract:
A method and system for determining fluid flow rates through a motor driven pump controlled by a variable speed drive is disclosed. The variable speed motor drive is used to characterize a pump fluid flow for a plurality of motor torque values at a plurality of known pump speeds. These characterized pump flow rate/torque values/speed are stored and used to determine a pump fluid flow at a measured pump speed and motor torque by interpolating between the known characterized fluid flow/torque/speed values. In another aspect of the invention, the pump flow rate at a measured torque, at a specified characterizing speed value is determined by interpolating between known characterizing pump flow rates. The determined pump flow rates can then be used to determine pump flow rates at a measured speed by interpolating between corresponding speed values which bound the measured speed.

Abstract:
A method for determining whether a centrifugal pump is degraded as operating outside of acceptable operating limits and includes the steps of determining a motor torque/TDH relationship over a range of speeds for minimum and maximum flow rates and at least at two other intermediate flow rates, sensing and measuring at least another pump value selected from a differential pressure across the pump, a pump discharge pressure or pump flow, to provide an output pump value and comparing said value with said determined relationship values to provide an indication as to whether said pump has degraded.

Method And Apparatus For Dynamically Determining Vapor Pressure In Pumping Systems

US Patent:
6663352, Dec 16, 2003
Filed:
Jul 25, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/912819
Inventors:
Eugene P. Sabini - Skaneateles NY
Oakley Henyan - Auburn NY
Assignee:
ITT Manufacturing Enterprises, Inc. - Wilmington DE
International Classification:
F04B 4903
US Classification:
417 63, 417 87, 417201, 417292, 73730, 73731, 73 171
Abstract:
A method and system for dynamically determining a vapor pressure of a fluid passing through a pumping system by diverting a portion of the fluid from the pumping system into a chamber, isolating the diverted fluid from the pumping system, evacuating the chamber and measuring the vapor pressure of the isolated fluid. In another aspect of the invention, a temperature compensation device is included in the chamber to alter the chamber fluid temperature to insure that the chamber fluid temperature is substantially the same as the fluid in the pumping system.

Bearing Defect Detection Using Time Synchronous Averaging (Tsa) Of An Enveloped Accelerometer Signal

View page
US Patent:
6681634, Jan 27, 2004
Filed:
Dec 11, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/014044
Inventors:
Eugene P. Sabini - Skaneateles NY
Jerome A. Lorenc - Seneca Falls NY
Oakley Henyan - Auburn NY
Kenneth L. Hauenstein - Seneca Falls NY
Assignee:
ITT Manufacturing Enterprises, Inc. - Wilminington DE
International Classification:
G01M 1304
US Classification:
73593, 73660
Abstract:
A method is provided of identifying a rotating bearing defect featuring the steps of measuring the vibration of the rotating bearing to obtain a waveform signal; filtering the waveform signal to remove unwanted signal frequencies; enveloping the filtered waveform signal to obtain an enveloped low frequency time waveform; and synchronizing the enveloped low frequency time waveform to the running speed of the rotating bearing in such a way to preserve the phase relationship between the tachometer pulse and bearing defect to obtain a time synchronized waveform. The method may include the step of measuring the rotational speed of the rotating bearing; and the step of measuring the rotational speed of the rotating bearing comprises measuring the rotational speed of the rotating bearing with a tachometer.

Abstract:
The invention provides an oil level or condition sensor featuring a housing and a baffle or plate arrangement arranged in the housing, where the baffle or plate arrangement forms a capacitor when the housing is filled with oil, the baffle or plate arrangement being responsive to a signal, for providing an oil level or condition sensor signal containing information about the level or condition of the oil in the housing. The baffle or plate arrangement may include one or more plates or a single or multiple star shaped baffles. The one or more plates or multiple star shaped baffles are spaced apart to form the capacitor. The level or condition of the oil within the baffle or plate arrangement changes the inductance. The single or multiple star shaped baffles each have a small hole in the center which provides a visual indication of the oil level. The housing has a transparent window.
