A system and method are described for allowing cable operators to actively block, pass through, modify, append, filter, or replace triggers corresponding to various forms of enhanced content being transmitted across a cable system. Abstract:
A user initiates an unprompted, context-sensitive request for supplemental content related to a television broadcast being displayed by an interactive television system. The information request includes an identification of the interactive television system and contextual information pertaining to the television program being viewed. The content source searches for supplemental content based upon the contextual information. If no supplemental content is found, a global information network, such as the Internet, is searched. The supplemental content is from the content source or the global information network to the interactive television system for display to the user.

Abstract:
An interactive television system initiates unprompted, context-sensitive requests for supplemental content related to the television broadcast or discrete segments thereof. The related supplemental content is received by the interactive television system and pre-cached in a storage device associated therewith. In response to a user command, the stored supplemental content is retrieved and displayed by the interactive television system.
