System And Method For Providing Group Communication Services In An Existing Communication System

View page
US Patent:
6477150, Nov 5, 2002
Filed:
Mar 3, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/518985
Inventors:
Mark Maggenti - San Diego CA
Douglas M. Crockett - San Diego CA
Eric Rosen - Solana Beach CA
Assignee:
Qualcomm, Inc. - San Diego CA
International Classification:
H04L 1266
US Classification:
370312, 370462
Abstract:
The present invention is a system and method for providing group communication services in an existing communication system. Group communications are enabled by installing a communications manager in a data network such as the Internet. The communications manager acts as a configurable switch, allowing communications from any group member to be transmitted to all other group members. The communications processed by the communications manager take the form of data packets, suitable for transmission over the data network. The data packets are generated by communication devices operating within the communication system. The use of the communications manager further allows users of other communication systems and devices to participate in group communications with each other.

Method And Apparatus For Performing Coverage Control For Multicast Services In A Wireless Network

View page
US Patent:
6633765, Oct 14, 2003
Filed:
Aug 28, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/649267
Inventors:
Mark Maggenti - San Diego CA
Assignee:
Qualcomm, Incorporated - San Diego CA
International Classification:
H04B 1500
US Classification:
455503, 370312, 370390
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for providing coverage control for multicast service in a wireless network. The present invention comprises a central transceiver for receiving a membership report from a plurality of wireless communication devices, the membership report identifying a multicast group to which at least one wireless communication device belongs. The central transceiver transmits an indication of the multicast group identified in the membership report to at least a portion of the plurality of wireless communication devices. The wireless communication devices use the information contained within the indication to determine whether or not to transmit a membership report identifying a multicast group to which it currently belongs.

Method And Apparatus For Reducing Latency In Waking Up A Group Of Dormant Communication Devices

View page
US Patent:
6725053, Apr 20, 2004
Filed:
Dec 4, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/006034
Inventors:
Eric Rosen - Solana Beach CA
Mark Maggenti - San Diego CA
Assignee:
Qualcomm Incorporated - San Diego CA
International Classification:
H04Q 720
US Classification:
455518, 455519, 455574
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for reducing dormant-wakeup latency in a group communication network provides for a significant reduction in the actual total dormant-wakeup time and the PTT latency perceived by the talker through caching the network-initiated wakeup triggers destined for target listeners, and delivering a wakeup trigger to a target mobile station as soon as the target mobile station has re-established its traffic channel.

Controller For Reducing Latency In A Group Dormancy-Wakeup Process In A Group Communication Network

View page
US Patent:
6738617, May 18, 2004
Filed:
Dec 4, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/006037
Inventors:
Eric Rosen - Solana Beach CA
Mark Maggenti - San Diego CA
Assignee:
Qualcomm Incorporated - San Diego CA
International Classification:
H04Q 720
US Classification:
455418, 455419
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for reducing latency in a group communication network provides for a significant reduction in the actual total dormancy wakeup time and the PTT latency by exchanging group call signaling even when mobiles are dormant and no traffic channel is active. The method and apparatus provides for exchanging the group call signaling through the use of the short data burst (SDB) message signaling. The method and apparatus provides for reestablishing dedicated traffic channels for the talker mobile and the dormant listener mobiles advantageously in parallel.

Method And An Apparatus For Terminating A User From A Group Call In A Group Communication Network

View page
US Patent:
6781963, Aug 24, 2004
Filed:
Feb 14, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/077267
Inventors:
Douglas M. Crockett - San Diego CA
Eric C. Rosen - Solana Beach CA
Mark Maggenti - Del Mar CA
Assignee:
Qualcomm Inc - San Diego CA
International Classification:
H04L 1216
US Classification:
370260, 37920201, 455422
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for terminating a member from a group call in a group communication network provides for receiving an indication from a user who wishes to terminate participation in a group call and sending a request to a server to terminate the user from the group call. The method and apparatus further provides for the server to receive the request for terminating a user from a group call, terminate the user from the group call, and send a response indicating that the user is terminated from the group call.

Filed:
Feb 12, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/075884
Inventors:
Eric Rosen - Solana Beach CA, US
Mark Maggenti - San Diego CA, US
Assignee:
Qualcomm Incorporated - San Diego CA
International Classification:
H04B007/00
H04H001/00
H04L012/66
US Classification:

Abstract:
A method and apparatus for providing an efficient dormant mode for push-to-talk communication devices in a group communication network provides for determining whether the net has been inactive for a predetermined first time period and, if so, causing each member of the net to enter a control-hold mode, wherein each member of the net maintains its dedicated traffic channel. The method further includes the steps of determining whether each member of the net has been in the control-hold mode for a predetermined second time period and, if so, causing each member of the net to enter a dormant mode, wherein each member of the net releases its dedicated traffic channel. The method and apparatus further provides for causing each member of the net to cache its service configuration state before entering the dormant mode.
