I've been in the Chicago suburbs my whole life. Went to college at Northern Illinois University, graduated in 1988 with a degree in Business Management and a minor in Economics. Not really cut out for an office job so I enrolled in the apprentice program with the Carpenter’s Union. I worked with residential carpenter contractors for 17 years and worked mostly on the sprawling subdivisions. When the housing market crashed and new home-building basically stopped, I was laid off in 2008. Started my own remodeling/home improvement/handyman company until the KTU opportunity came up early last year (I guess after the last reunion) and I went out to Aberdeen for training in April 2011. I got in when they were giving existing franchises the opportunity to buy another territory and could sell it to someone who wanted to come into the system. Tom and Rae Dunlap bought the Orland Park, Lemont, Tinley Park area and that became my territory. I’ve worked with Tom and my brother Marty occasionally on their jobs for years so I was familiar with the KTU system. Rae does my sales and generally Tom is my go-to guy when I ask how to do something, so we’ve kind of become a team and generally use the same subs. I like the opportunity to “be my own boss” and don’t think I could go back to a M-F 7-3:30 type of job again.
