Filed:
Jan 10, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/044647
Inventors:
Steven I. Ross - S. Hamilton MA, US
Jeffrey G. MacAllister - Chestnut Hill MA, US
Christopher A. Hyland - Foxboro MA, US
Marijane M. Zeller - Medford MA, US
Kathleen A. Howard - Burlington MA, US
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G10L 11/00
US Classification:
704270, 704 9, 704257, 706 46
Abstract:
A dialog management system functions to manage the dialog between a user of a computer system and one or more speech enabled software applications. The user provides spoken input to a microphone connected to the computer system, and hears responses from one or more applications through a speaker connected to the computer system. The dialog management system includes a dialog manager, a turn manager, a speak queue, dialog contexts, and dialog state. The dialog manager provides top-level control of the dialog and stores responses based on the user's spoken input in a speak queue for later output to the user. The turn manager controls delivery of the responses to the user based on the dialog context and the dialog state, to provide a polite dialog with the user that enables the user to be in control of the dialog. The dialog context provides information about each dialog. The dialog state provides information about whose turn it is (computer or user) to speak.

The dialog manager provides top-level control of the dialog and stores responses based on the user's spoken input in a speak queue for later output to the user. The turn manager controls delivery of the responses to the user based on the dialog context and the dialog state, to provide a polite asynchronous dialog with the user that enables the user to be in control of the dialog. The dialog context provides information about each dialog. The dialog state provides information about whose turn it is (computer or user) to speak.

Displaying Strengths Of Social Relationships Between A User And Other People

View page
US Patent:
7970712, Jun 28, 2011
Filed:
Dec 19, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/323567
Inventors:
Joann Ruvolo - San Jose CA, US
Andrew L. Schirmer - Andover MA, US
Marijane M. Zeller - Medford MA, US
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06Q 10/00
US Classification:
705319, 705 11
Abstract:
The invention provides method of displaying strengths of social relationships between users of a computerized network. The invention evaluates network information, such as network communications, between one user of the network and other users of the network to produce metrics. The invention then normalizes the metrics from the perspective of the viewing user to produce relationship values representing strengths of social relationships between the viewing user and the other users. The invention classifies the relationship values into different groups, and optionally assigns context commands to each of the groups. The invention places each of the other users in one of the groups (according to their relationship value) and then displays a listing of the other users and their associated group identifications. The invention can assign different indicators to each of the groups, wherein the display links corresponding indicators to each of the other users to graphically identify the group in which each of the other users was placed. The display can utilize numbers, characters, sizes, fonts, character sets, icons, graphic features, colors, motions, speeds, and/or directions to graphically distinguish and identify the group in which each of the other users was placed.

Method And Apparatus For Determining Attributes Among Objects

View page
US Patent:
20030154212, Aug 14, 2003
Filed:
Jan 28, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/352500
Inventors:
Andrew Schirmer - Andover MA, US
Marijane Zeller - Medford MA, US
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F007/00
US Classification:
707/10300R
Abstract:
An aggregation system performs an aggregation of object attributes and affinities to create a group profile of a plurality of object profiles. The system may be used with an electronic mail inbox that uses a mail agent to categorize incoming electronic mail to facilitate more flexible and rapid review of special types of mail, such as meeting requests. The aggregation system performs an analysis of the participants listed in a meeting request and displays an aggregated profile that provides a “big picture” view of the attributes of the group members as a single entity, thereby enabling the user to get an immediate sense of a group's areas of expertise. The aggregation system may also suggest additional participants with the needed expertise which the user may ignore or invite by simply mailing the meeting request thread thereto.

US Patent:
20040111431, Jun 10, 2004
Filed:
Dec 9, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/315264
Inventors:
Marijane Zeller - Medford MA, US
Michael Elder - Greer SC, US
Oliver Heinz - West Newton MA, US
Andrew Schirmer - Andover MA, US
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F007/00
US Classification:
707/104100
Abstract:
A contextual organization chart based on two selected individuals is constructed from a database of individual names, manager names, and profiles. Awareness data is provided for people in the organization, a people awareness indicator and a nesting control indicator are appended to names in the constructed view. A user may access profile data by selecting a name in the view, expand the view to show additional individuals by selecting a nesting control indicator, or initiate a communication with an individual by selecting an awareness indicator.

System And Method For Evaluating Information Aggregates By Generation Of Knowledge Capital

US Patent:
20040117222, Jun 17, 2004
Filed:
Dec 14, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/319171

Andrew Schirmer - Andover MA, US
Marijane Zeller - Medford MA, US
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F017/60
US Classification:
705/007000
Abstract:
Information in a database collection of knowledge resources is evaluated by collecting a plurality of documents having non-unique values on a shared attribute into an information aggregate; assigning to each document an usefulness value; and calculating and visualizing the knowledge capital of the aggregate as a sum of the usefulness values for all documents in the aggregate.

Method, System And Program Product For Identifying Similar User Profiles In A Collection

View page
US Patent:
20040117357, Jun 17, 2004
Filed:
Dec 17, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/320966
Inventors:
Andrew Schirmer - Andover MA, US
Marijane Zeller - Medford MA, US
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F007/00
US Classification:
707/003000
Abstract:
Under the present invention, a collection of user profiles is provided. Each user profile includes one or more attributes that are associated with a set of data items. When a particular user profile is selected by a querying user, the data items therein are compared to the data items of the other user profiles. Any of the other user profiles that have data items that match those in the selected user profile will be identified as a similar user profile. A list of similar user profiles can then be generated and provided to the querying user.

Method, System And Program Product For Filtering An Entry Of Data Items

View page
US Patent:
20040122801, Jun 24, 2004
Filed:
Dec 18, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/322954
Inventors:
Andrew Schirmer - Andover MA, US
Marijane Zeller - Medford MA, US
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F007/00
US Classification:
707/003000
Abstract:
A request corresponding to a target user is received from a querying user. The request can specifically identify the target user, or it could include a search criteria that results in identification of one or more target users. In any event, once the request is received, entries of data items (e.g., user profiles) associated with the target user(s) and the querying user (or some other user) are accessed. Based on the data items in the querying user's profile (or the other user's profile), the data items in the target user's profiles are filtered so that the querying user is not presented with an overload of information. Once the target user's profile has been filtered, it will be presented to the querying user.
