Abstract:
A system for migrating information includes a first information handling system (IHS). The first IHS is for, in response to a first boot event, booting from a computer readable medium, bypassing the first IHS user authentication requirement, and establishing a connection between the first IHS and a second IHS. The system for migrating information also includes the second IHS, coupled to the first IHS. The second IHS is for, in response to a second boot event, booting from a storage device of the second IHS, establishing the connection between the first IHS and the second IHS, and migrating information from the first IHS to the second IHS.

US Patent:
8458692, Jun 4, 2013
Filed:
Sep 28, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/952073
Inventors:
Marc Jarvis - Belton TX, US
Shaofei Chen - Austin TX, US
Kevin Hanes - Round Rock TX, US
Jefferson Raley - Austin TX, US
Assignee:
Dell Products L.P. - Round Rock TX
International Classification:
G06F 9/445
G06F 9/44
G06F 15/177
G06F 3/00
G06F 13/00
US Classification:
717176, 717175, 717121, 710 33, 709220
Abstract:
Data migration from existing to replacement information handling systems is integrated with manufacture of the replacement information handling system by including a data migration application and rules in the image copied to the replacement information handling system during manufacture. The rules define the data migration, such as the types of files allowed and disallowed for data migration, the physical interface for the data migration, the initial power up and display interface to support the data migration application and the deletion of the data migration application after completion of the data migration operation. The replacement information handling system ships to the end user and initiates the data migration application on power-up to present instruction to perform the data migration.

Method And System For Information Handling System Custom Image Manufacture

US Patent:
20040093283, May 13, 2004
Filed:
Nov 12, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/292035
Inventors:
Marc Jarvis - Belton TX, US
Kevin Hanes - Round Rock TX, US
Jefferson Raley - Austin TX, US
Kent Nagase - Cedar Park TX, US
International Classification:
G06F017/60
US Classification:
705/027000
Abstract:
A custom image processing system and method automatically verifies the validity of custom images for manufacture of information handling systems by electronically analyzing the custom image to determine its base hardware configuration, to confirm its proper configuration, and to confirm its compatibility with ordered information handling systems. Upon verification of the custom image, an automatically generated production image and customization scripts are provided to a burn rack to manufacture the information handling systems with the custom image and a desired customization level.

System And Method For Remotely Building An Information Handling System Manufacturing Image

View page
US Patent:
20050216912, Sep 29, 2005
Filed:
Mar 29, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/811683
Inventors:
Tim Cox - Austin TX, US
Edward Batchelor - Round Rock TX, US
Andrew Harris - Pflugerville TX, US
Marc Jarvis - Belton TX, US
Chandar Kamalanathan - Austin TX, US
International Classification:
G06F009/445
US Classification:
717178000
Abstract:
An information handling system image builder server associated with a manufacturer supports remote access by customers through networked communications, such as the Internet, to create images for loading on information handling systems manufactured for the customers. An image creation engine of the server accesses an image library to build an image with image components selected in accordance with customer parameters. The image is built on hardware or virtual test information handling systems interfaced with the image creation engine. Customers may remotely upload custom image components to the library, such as custom applications and settings, and remotely test the operation of the image on the test information handling systems before promoting the built image to a manufacture environment for manufacture of information handling systems with the image.

System And Method For Information Handling System Image Network Communication

View page
US Patent:
20060095755, May 4, 2006
Filed:
Nov 2, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/979632
Inventors:
Kevin Hanes - Round Rock TX, US
Tim Cox - Austin TX, US
Marc Jarvis - Belton TX, US
Chandar Kamalanathan - Austin TX, US
International Classification:
G06F 9/24
US Classification:
713002000
Abstract:
A system and method for information handling system manufacture analyzes an image to determine a traits definition that identifies the operating system, applications and unique information of the image, such as in a XML file. The image traits definition may be communicated to a manufacture site over a network and used to re-create the image for copying to a manufactured information handling system. Communication of the image traits definition consumes less network and storage resources than communication of the image, thus reducing the time and expense of image transfers to manufacture information handling systems.

System And Method For Migration To Manufactured Information Handling Systems

US Patent:
20060129769, Jun 15, 2006
Filed:
Dec 9, 2004
Appl. No.:
11/008703
Inventors:
Shaofei Chen - Austin TX, US
Marc Jarvis - Belton TX, US
Chandar Kamalanathan - Austin TX, US
Jefferson Raley - Austin TX, US
International Classification:
G06F 12/16
US Classification:
711162000
Abstract:
Data migration directly from legacy to replacement information handling systems is managed over a set of one or more switches. The legacy information handling system boots with a manufacturing operating system provided from a data migration information handling system server and runs a data migration application also provided from the server. Running the data migration application over the manufacturing operating system avoids password protection of the legacy information handling system. A pair of target storage device keys interface with a legacy and associated replacement system to aid in location of the replacement system on the network for direct system-to-system data transfer.
