Structure And Method For Pulse Telemetry

View page
US Patent:
6788219, Sep 7, 2004
Filed:
Nov 27, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/306487
Inventors:
Cili Sun - Sugarland TX
Laban M. Marsh - Houston TX
Bipin K. Pillai - Houston TX
Assignee:
Halliburton Energy Services, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
H04L 2730
US Classification:
34087023, 375239, 329313, 332112
Abstract:
A mud pulse telemetry technique that uses a number of bits per interval based on parameters of the pulse position modulation system in order to reduce data transfer time in a pulse position modulation system. More particularly, depending on parameters of the pulse position modulation such as the minimum-time and the bit-width, it may be possible to decrease overall transmission time by splitting values having a larger number of bits into multiple transmissions with each transmission having a smaller number of bits.

Filed:
Nov 27, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/305529
Inventors:
Laban M. Marsh - Houston TX, US
Cili Sun - Sugarland TX, US
Bipin K. Pillai - Houston TX, US
Leonardo Viana - Baton Rouge LA, US
Assignee:
Halliburton Energy Services, Inc. - Houston TX

34087019, 34087024, 3408531, 3408543, 375254, 375242, 367 83
Abstract:
The specification discloses algorithms for error recovery in pulse position modulation-based mud pulse telemetry. More particularly, the specification discloses detection and attempted correction of at least five possible error mechanisms: the missed detection of a pulse that creates an interval greater than maximum; the missed detection of a pulse that results in an interval still within acceptable boundaries; detection of an extra pulse; a pulse shift that results in data in contiguous intervals being affected; and a pulse shift resulting in a single interval data corruption.

Methods For Using A Formation Tester

View page
US Patent:
7216533, May 15, 2007
Filed:
May 19, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/132475
Inventors:
Malcolm D. McGregor - The Woodlands TX, US
Gregory N. Gilbert - Sugar Land TX, US
Mark A. Proett - Missouri City TX, US
James M. Fogal - Houston TX, US
David Welshans - Damon TX, US
Glenn C. Gray - Austin TX, US
Svetozar Simeonov - Houston TX, US
Laban M. Marsh - Houston TX, US
Jean Michel Beique - Katy TX, US
James E. Stone - Porter TX, US
Assignee:
Halliburton Energy Services, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 21/08
E21B 47/06
US Classification:
7315227, 7315251
Abstract:
A method of testing a downhole formation using a formation tester on a drill string. The formation tester is disposed downhole on a drill string and a formation test is performed by forming a seal between a formation probe assembly and the formation. A drawdown piston then creates a volume within a cylinder to draw formation fluid into the volume through the probe assembly. The pressure of the fluid within the cylinder is monitored. The formation test procedure may then be adjusted. The test procedure may be adjusted to account for the bubble point pressure of the fluid being monitored. The pressure may monitored to verify a proper seal is formed or is being maintained. The test procedure may also be performed by maintaining a substantially constant drawdown rate using a hydraulic threshold or a variable restrictor.
