Method And Apparatus For Generating The Optimum Read Timing For Read And Write Offset Of A Magneto Resistive Head

View page
US Patent:
6724553, Apr 20, 2004
Filed:
Oct 22, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/037783
Inventors:
Jong Yun Yun - Santa Clara CA
Kang Seok Lee - San Jose CA
Sang Hoon Chu - Santa Clara CA
Gyu Tack Kim - Santa Clara CA
Assignee:
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.
International Classification:
G11B 509
US Classification:
360 51, 360 31
Abstract:
A method for writing and reading data in a hard disk drive and compensating for an offset between a write element and a read element of a head. The method determines an offset time by determining the difference between a desired sync byte position and an actual sync byte position located between a preamble and a data sector of the disk. The difference corresponds to the offset between the read and write elements. The offset time is subtracted from the normal time for enabling the read gate of a disk drive pre-amplifier.

Method And Apparatus Providing A Self-Vaccine For A Disk Drive

View page
US Patent:
6958875, Oct 25, 2005
Filed:
Feb 27, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/376082
Inventors:
Jong Yun Yun - Cupertino CA, US
Yeong Kyun Lee - San Jose CA, US
Kang Seok Lee - San Jose CA, US
Ho In Sou - San Gabriel CA, US
Assignee:
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. - Suwon
International Classification:
G11B005/03
US Classification:
360 66, 360 67
Abstract:
A self-vaccine as used herein will refer to methods of operating a disk drive and the apparatus implementing such methods, which make the disk drive immune to changes in temperature, that keep the disk drive healthy when hot or cold. The invention includes a self-vaccine extending the read channel optimization parameter database of a track zone or sequence to test temperature ranges actually found in the user's operation of the disk drive. The invention also includes the self-vaccine updating the read channel optimization parameter database for an already tested temperature range, whenever there has been sufficient time passed since the read channel optimization was performed for that temperature range. The invention includes read channel optimized parameters for at least temperature ranges within the embedded disk controller, which are updated in the user's operating environment during idle time providing the self-vaccine. The invention includes disk drives including a self-vaccine method.

Method And Apparatus For Providing Positional Information On A Disk

View page
US Patent:
6982849, Jan 3, 2006
Filed:
Sep 13, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/952684
Inventors:
Tung Nguyen - San Jose CA, US
Sang Hoon Chu - Santa Clara CA, US
Jun Seok Shim - Cupertino CA, US
Kang Seok Lee - Cupertino CA, US
Soo Il Choi - Santa Clara CA, US
Seong Hwan Yu - San Jose CA, US
Assignee:
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. - Suwon
International Classification:
G11B 5/596
US Classification:
360 7708
Abstract:
The present invention is a method and apparatus for positioning a read/write head in a hard disk drive. The method comprises providing a disk having a at least one side with a plurality of tracks, where each of the tracks has a servo field with servo bits. The servo bits are read to provide a position signal for positioning a read/write head. The method determines a difference in position between an initial and a subsequent position of the read/write head on a track, where the subsequent location occurs after the read/write head has moved one revolution from the initial position on the track. The initial and subsequent positions are offset laterally. The method generates a compensation signal based on the initial position, the subsequent position and the difference. The position signal and the compensation signal are combined to provide a compensated position signal for positioning the read/write head. Various embodiments are described.

Lobster Eye X-Ray Imaging System And Method Of Fabrication Thereof

View page
US Patent:
7231017, Jun 12, 2007
Filed:
Jul 27, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/191095
Inventors:
Michael Gertsenshteyn - Torrance CA, US
Thomas Forrester - Westminster CA, US
Tomasz Jannson - Torrance CA, US
Kang Lee - Woodland Hills CA, US
Gajendra Savant - Rolling Hills Estates CA, US
Assignee:
Physical Optics Corporation - Torrance CA
International Classification:
G01N 23/203
G21K 1/06
US Classification:
378 87, 378 84, 378 86, 378149, 2505051
Abstract:
A Lobster Eye X-ray Imaging System based on a unique Lobster Eye (LE) structure, X-ray generator, scintillator-based detector and cooled CCD (or Intensified CCD) for real-time, safe, staring Compton backscatter X-ray detection of objects hidden under ground, in containers, behind walls, bulkheads etc. In contrast to existing scanning pencil beam systems, Lobster Eye X-Ray Imaging System's true focusing X-ray optics simultaneously acquire ballistic Compton backscattering photons (CBPs) from an entire scene irradiated by a wide-open cone beam from one or more X-ray generators. The Lobster Eye X-ray Imaging System collects (focuses) thousands of times more backscattered hard X-rays in the range from 40 to 120 keV (or wavelength λ=0. 31 to 0. 1 Å) than current backscatter imaging sensors (BISs), giving high sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and penetration through ground, metal walls etc. The collection efficiency of Lobster Eye X-ray Imaging System is optimized to reduce emitted X-ray power and miniaturize the device.

Stacked Rotary Connector Assembly Using A Split Ring Configuration

View page
US Patent:
7297002, Nov 20, 2007
Filed:
Nov 21, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/285592
Inventors:
Andrew Kostrzewski - Garden Grove CA, US
Kang Lee - Woodland Hills CA, US
Tomasz Jannson - Torrance CA, US
Gajendra Savant - Rolling Hills Estates CA, US
Assignee:
Physical Optics Corporation - Torrance CA
International Classification:
H01R 33/00
US Classification:
439 37, 439165
Abstract:
An improved stacked rotary connector assembly wherein each connector comprises a pair of rings and the rings of each rotary connector thereof are individually split and mechanically separable. Because the input and output rings are each split and separable, any one rotary connector may be removed from the stack without requiring removal of any other rotary connector and without disturbing the input/output buses of the assembly.

Connector For Harsh Environments

View page
US Patent:
7335067, Feb 26, 2008
Filed:
Jul 27, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/191094
Inventors:
Kang Lee - Woodland Hills CA, US
Thomas Forrester - Westminster CA, US
Tomasz Jannson - Torrance CA, US
Andrew Kostrzewski - Garden Grove CA, US
Gajendra Savant - Rolling Hills Estates CA, US
Assignee:
Physical Optics Corporation - Torrance CA
International Classification:
H01R 13/24
US Classification:
439700, 439824, 439289
Abstract:
Two embodiments of a connector that can be mated without regard for its orientation are disclosed. One embodiment is mated and demated autonomously as part of a system for recovering, docking with, recharging and re-launching unmanned aerial vehicles. Another embodiment is employed on the decks of vessels to facilitate mating and demating of various equipment providing different functions to reconfigure the vessel. Because both embodiments are configured for connection irrespective of angular orientation over 360, they are especially suited for harsh environments including autonomous operation, rough seas, darkness and the like.
