Reducing Actuator Arm Oscillation During Settle Mode In A Disc Drive Servo System

View page
US Patent:
6937428, Aug 30, 2005
Filed:
Feb 16, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/788065
Inventors:
Hai Thanh Ho - Westminster CO, US
Justin Won - Longmont CO, US
Fadi Youssef Abou-Jaoude - Arvada CO, US
Gregory Andrew Campbell - Longmont CO, US
Assignee:
Seagate Technology LLC - Scotts Valley CA
International Classification:
G11B005/596
G11B021/02
US Classification:
360 7806, 318560, 318611, 360 75
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for compensating actuator arm oscillation induced by resonance mode excitation during a seek in a disc drive data handling system. The actuator arm supports a head adjacent a recording surface, and a servo loop controls the position of the actuator arm. A frequency of actuator arm oscillation is identified, after which a seek is initiated to move the head from an initial track to a destination track on the recording surface. A position error signal (PES) is generated to indicate position of the head relative to the destination track, and a compensation signal is generated by a filter based on the PES and the frequency of oscillation of the actuator arm. The compensation signal is adapted to remove a component of the PES arising from the actuator arm oscillation, and is applied to the servo loop as the head is settled onto the destination track.

Interleaved Repeatable Runout Estimation

US Patent:
7151645, Dec 19, 2006
Filed:
Sep 23, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/669185
Inventors:
Justin Won - Longmont CO, US
Samir Mittal - Longmont CO, US
Assignee:
Seagate Technology LLC - Scotts Valley CA
International Classification:
G11B 5/596
G11B 21/02
US Classification:
360 7704, 360 7702
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for reducing the effects of non-repeatable runout (NRRO) in the estimation of repeatable runout (RRO) in a disc drive is disclosed. PES information is a acquired in a way that leads to randomization of the phase of the NRRO, thereby decreasing the number of revolutions required to estimate the true RRO. A number of RRO estimation measurements are taken over a number of non-consecutive disc revolutions that are spaced in time. In one embodiment, one revolution of RRO data is collected from each head before collecting a second revolution of RRO data from any of the heads. In another embodiment, RRO estimation is concurrent with media certification, such that PES data is obtained while the head is in the write position and writes a track of data for media certification. Similarly, PES data for the read position is obtained while concurrently reading back the written data.

Corrected Read/Write Offset Compensation

US Patent:
7486468, Feb 3, 2009
Filed:
May 10, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/747008
Inventors:
Ravi Hebbar - Longmont CO, US
Justin Won - Longmont CO, US
Assignee:
Maxtor Corporation - Longmont CO
International Classification:
G11B 21/02
US Classification:

Abstract:
A read trajectory and/or a write trajectory of a read/write head of a rotatable disk drive is adjusted using a compensation signal that compensates for a time-varying difference between the read trajectory and the write trajectory.

Repeated Runout Position Error Compensation In A Disc Drive Servo System

View page
US Patent:
20020012191, Jan 31, 2002
Filed:
Jun 8, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/877053
Inventors:
Hai Ho - Broomfield CO, US
Justin Won - Longmont CO, US
Mirmehdi Abrishamchian - Marlborough MA, US
Gregory Campbell - Lyons CO, US
Assignee:
SEAGATE TECHNOLOGY LLC
International Classification:
G11B027/36
G11B005/596
US Classification:
360/077040, 360/077080, 360/031000
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for compensating repeated runout position error in a disc drive data handling system having an actuator assembly which supports a head adjacent a recording surface. A servo loop generates a position error signal (PES) to control the position of the head. A digital filter is configured to place a notch in an error sensitivity function relating the PES to the repeated runout position error, with the notch being nominally centered at a frequency of rotation of the recording surface. The filter thereafter filters the PES to generate compensation signals that are injected into the servo loop. At least selected filter parameters are determined by measuring the frequency response of the servo loop and used as a priori knowledge to produce a loop matching effect that results in a consistent convergence rate for any targeted frequency to be filtered.
