System And Method For Electronic Processing Of Cymbal Vibration

View page
US Patent:
8497418, Jul 30, 2013
Filed:
Dec 13, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/966965
Inventors:
John V. Roderick - Marshfield MA, US
Julia Truchsess - Sandy Hook CT, US
Christopher Ryan - Northampton MA, US
David McDonald - Merrimack NH, US
Jonathan A. Marks - Summerville MA, US
Assignee:
Avedis Zildjian Co. - Norwell MA
International Classification:
G10H 1/12
US Classification:
84737, 84464 A
Abstract:
In one embodiment, an electronic cymbal system includes a first pickup configured to generate an electrical signal representative of vibrations in a first cymbal, and a controller configured to receive the first electrical signal and to process the first electrical signal to generate an output. The controller includes a digital signal processor (DSP) configured to subject a version of the first electrical signal to a digital signal processing technique. The digital signal processing technique includes one or more of dynamic range compression, expansion, frequency equalization, harmonic excitation, comb filtering, and pitch shifting. The cymbals may be any of variety of known cymbals, such as hi-hat, crash and ride cymbals, and may be of the perforated type configured to reduce noise for indoor use. Lighting control may be provided to illuminate the cymbal for functional or aesthetic purposes.

Wheeled Vehicle For Amusement Purposes

US Patent:
20070176382, Aug 2, 2007
Filed:
Jan 25, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/657765
Inventors:
Julia D. Truchsess - Sandy Hook CT, US
James Flechner - Sandy Hook CT, US
International Classification:
B62M 1/00
US Classification:
280 8705
Abstract:
A vehicle including a frame; a rider support platform supported by the frame; a pair of first wheel units pivotably supported by the frame; a pair of second wheel units supported by the frame; first and second handlebars pivotably supported by the frame; a first linkage connecting the first handlebar to one of the first wheel units so that pivotable movement of the first handlebar causes wheel of the one of the first wheel units to turn relatively to the frame; a second linkage connecting the second handlebar to the other of the first wheel units so that pivotable movement of the second handlebar causes wheel of the other of the first wheel units to turn relatively to the frame; and a movement coordinator which connects the first and second linkages to each other so that pivotable movement of one or both of the first and second handlebars in one direction causes the wheels of both first wheel units to turn in the same direction.

Non-Contact Cymbal Pickup Using Multiple Microphones

View page
US Patent:
20120060669, Mar 15, 2012
Filed:
Sep 14, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/232821
Inventors:
Christopher Ryan - Northampton MA, US
Julia D. Truchsess - Sandy Hook CT, US
David A. McDonald - Merrimack NH, US
Assignee:
Avedis Zildjian Co. - Norwell MA
International Classification:
G10H 3/00
G10D 13/02
US Classification:
84723
Abstract:
As described herein, a sound pickup for musical cymbals includes an integrated assembly attachable to a cymbal stand. The integrated assembly includes a plurality of microphones arranged and electrically connected such that the resulting amplified sound is of optimal quality and of relatively constant loudness regardless of cymbal tilt. In one embodiment, two microphones are used, with the signal phase from one microphone being inverted prior to combination with the signal from the other microphone. The inversion is implemented using an inverter and serves to cancel signals that are in phase with one another and augment signals that are out of phase with one another. This, along with suitable placement of the pickup, exploits the fact that the more desirable components of the cymbal's vibration at the inflection point of the cymbal are out of phase with each other, whereas the less-desirable components are in phase with each other.

US Patent:
20120060670, Mar 15, 2012
Filed:
Sep 14, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/232831
Inventors:
Julia D. Truchsess - Sandy Hook CT, US
Assignee:
Avedis Zildjian Co. - Norwell MA
International Classification:
G10H 3/06
US Classification:
84724
Abstract:
A sound pickup for musical cymbals includes an integrated assembly attachable to a cymbal stand. The integrated assembly includes a plurality of microphones arranged to achieve optimal quality and relatively constant loudness regardless of cymbal tilt. In one embodiment, two microphones are used, with signal phase from one microphone being inverted prior to combination with the signal from the other microphone. An illumination system having one or more light sources and a controller is optional. The controller includes a processor couplable to the pickup by way of a cable having at least one signal conductor for delivering audio signals from the microphone to the processor. The controller also includes an illumination control signal source delivering a DC voltage bias to the pickup for actuating the light sources.

US Patent:
20130312590, Nov 28, 2013
Filed:
May 24, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/479953
Inventors:
Julia D. Truchsess - Sandy Hook CT, US
Assignee:
Avedis Zildjian Co. - Norwell MA
International Classification:
G10H 3/14
US Classification:
84725
Abstract:
A cymbal vibration transducer system includes a cymbal and a cymbal pickup. The cymbal pickup has a ferromagnetic body affixed to the cymbal and is operable to vibrate with the cymbal. It also has a one or more pickup heads each operable to transduce the vibrations of the ferromagnetic body into electrical signals. A method for transducing cymbal vibrations includes vibrating a ferromagnetic body commensurately with cymbal vibrations, applying a first magnetic flux to the vibrating the ferromagnetic body, and detecting disruptions in a first electric signal resulting from vibrations of the ferromagnetic body in the first magnetic flux.
