Amplifier System With On-Demand Power Supply Boost

View page
US Patent:
6636103, Oct 21, 2003
Filed:
Apr 18, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/837395
Inventors:
Scott Wurcer - Cambridge MA
John W. Pierdomenico - Temple PA
Assignee:
Analog Devices, Inc. - Norwood MA
International Classification:
G05F 110
US Classification:
327536, 327390
Abstract:
An amplifier system with on-demand power supply boost includes an amplifier circuit for receiving an input signal and a charge pump connected to positive and negative power supplies and having predetermined supply voltages and being responsive to the input signal for increasing beyond the predetermined supply voltages the supply voltage applied to the amplifier in response to an increase in the input signal and a tracking charge pump usable in the amplifier system which includes a charge storage device; a unidirectional isolation device interconnecting the charge storage device and one pole of a power supply; a driver circuit responsive to an input signal and interconnected between both poles of the power supply; the power supply having predetermined power supply voltages; and a bias circuit for biasing the driver circuit to charge the charge storage device in the charge mode and in the boost mode, for increasing beyond the predetermined power supply voltages, the supply voltage supplied by the storage device to an external load in response to an increase in the input signal.

Amplifier System With Digital Adaptive Power Boost

View page
US Patent:
8093953, Jan 10, 2012
Filed:
Sep 24, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/566588
Inventors:
John Pierdomenico - Temple PA, US
Zoltan Frasch - Hooksett NH, US
Charly El-Khoury - Woburn MA, US
Assignee:
Analog Devices, Inc. - Norwood MA
International Classification:
H03F 3/04
US Classification:
330297
Abstract:
An amplifier system with digital adaptive power boost includes a charge pump for providing a power supply to an amplifier. The charge pump may switch between a fixed input DC voltage and a boosted value for a certain period of time in response to an increase in an input signal to the amplifier. The charge pump may use a switching transistor which is switched on only when the input signal to the amplifier exceeds a threshold. The amplifier system may be used for envelope tracking, especially for envelope tracking of low duty cycle signals, e. g. , xDSL or vDSL.

Boosting Xdsl Amplifier Supply Power On-Demand

View page
US Patent:
8232834, Jul 31, 2012
Filed:
Aug 5, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/535812
Inventors:
John Pierdomenico - Temple PA, US
Assignee:
Analog Devices, Inc. - Norwood MA
International Classification:
G05F 1/10
US Classification:
327536, 330124 R, 330295, 330297
Abstract:
Systems and methods for increasing amplifier supply power on demand for a plurality of xDSL signals is provided. In an embodiment, circuitry may be used to detect the signal or signals having the highest voltage. In different embodiments, the signal(s) with the highest absolute voltage or highest combined voltage between complementary signal pairs may be compared to a threshold voltage, such as an existing amplifier supply voltage. In different embodiments, when these highest voltage(s) exceed the threshold voltage, the corresponding amplifier supply voltages may be increased to meet the increased amplification demand. In some embodiments when these highest voltage(s) do not exceed the threshold voltage, the amplifier supply voltage may not be increased and the existing amplifier supply voltage may be used to amplify the xDSL signals.

Circuits With Floating Bias

View page
US Patent:
20150256170, Sep 10, 2015
Filed:
Mar 5, 2014
Appl. No.:
14/197818
Inventors:
- Norwood MA, US
John W. Pierdomenico - Temple PA, US
David Hall Whitney - Westford MA, US
Assignee:
Analog Devices, Inc. - Norwood MA
International Classification:
H03K 17/56
H03K 17/60
Abstract:
Apparatus and methods to increase the range of a signal processing circuit. A system uses floating bias circuits coupled to a signal processing circuit to increase the range of power supplies that can be used with the signal processing circuit, while maintaining the components of the signal processing circuit within a breakdown voltage threshold. As the voltage level of the data signal varies, the voltage level of the floating bias circuits varies as well.
