Liquid Crystal Light Emitting Display System

View page
US Patent:
48386618, Jun 13, 1989
Filed:
Jan 5, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/141015
Inventors:
John M. McKee - Coral Springs FL
Marilyn S. Burger - Pompano FL
Assignee:
Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
G02F 113
US Classification:
350345
Abstract:
A liquid crystal light emitting display (LCLED) device having two modes of operation. In the first mode the LCLED device produces dark symbols on a light background. In the second mode the LCLED device emits light producing light symbols on a dark background. The LCLED includes a LCD cell having an optically active nematic liquid crystal composition interposed between two parallel glass substrates. The glass substrates having transparent electrode indicia on the inner surfaces. Disposed on the outer surfaces of the glass substrates are polarizers having their axes of polarization orthogonal in the first mode, and their axes of polarization parallel in the second mode. A transparent panel having indicia identical to the electrode indicia is disposed on the exterior of one of the polarizers. The transparent panel is comprised of transparent material having fluorescent dye stuff. The transparent panel is optically connected to a light collecting means.

Display Pager With Separate Readout Module

View page
US Patent:
47047402, Nov 3, 1987
Filed:
Feb 9, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/015504
Inventors:
John M. McKee - Coral Springs FL
Roberto Kurcbart - Boca Raton FL
Assignee:
Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
H04B 108
US Classification:
455348
Abstract:
A liquid crystal display module with self contained display decoder circuitry is attached to a radio frame with a minimum of electrical interconnections. Module assembly and attachment are both accomplished without the use of tools. Attaching the module to the frame interlocks the module to prevent accidental disassembly and places a preload force on the electrical interconnections to insure good electrical continuity. Ambient light reflection provides primary display illumination while lamps, controlled by an integral switch, provide secondary illumination.

Moldable/Foldable Radio Housing

View page
US Patent:
49397923, Jul 3, 1990
Filed:
Nov 16, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/121323
Inventors:
Glenn F. Urbish - Coral Springs FL
John M. McKee - Coral Springs FL
Martin J. McKinley - Sunrise FL
Anthony B. Suppelsa - Coral Springs FL
Assignee:
Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
H04B 108
US Classification:
455347
Abstract:
A molded thermoplastic housing (100) includes base (102) and cover (104) members joined by a living hinge (106). The base member (102) includes a peripheral wall (108). Four solderable printed circuit patterns (112, 114, 116 and 118) are vacuum deposited onto the interior and exterior surfaces of both housing members. The printed circuit patterns on opposing surfaces of the base and cover members are joined by conductive through-holes (e. g. , 120 and 122), while the printed circuit patterns on the interior surfaces of the base and cover members are joined by an interconnecting printed circuit pattern (124) which is vacuum deposited onto the living hinge. Mylar sheets (132) are adhered to the exterior surface of the housing to insulate the exterior printed circuit patterns. An antenna pattern (126) is also vacuum deposited onto an exterior surface of the housing. A switch (136) and battery contact (152) are integrally formed with the housing and an integrally molded structural support means strenghthens the housing members.

Abstract:
An taut armature, resonant impulse transducer (100) includes an armature (12), including an upper (14) and a lower (16) non-linear resonant suspension member, each including at least two juxtaposed planar compound beams (202, 204 and 206, 208) connected symmetrically about a contiguous planar central region (210), and further connected to two contiguous planar perimeter regions (212, 214), an electromagnetic driver (24, 26), coupled to the upper and lower non-linear resonant suspension members (14, 16) about the two contiguous planar perimeter regions (212, 214), the electromagnetic driver (24, 26) effecting an alternating electromagnetic field in response to an input signal, and a magnetic motional mass (18) suspended between the upper and lower non-linear resonant suspension members(14, 16) about the contiguous planar central region (210), and coupled to the alternating electromagnetic field for generating an alternating movement of the magnetic motional mass (18) in response thereto, the alternating movement of the magnetic motional mass (18) being transformed through the upper and lower non-linear resonant suspension members (14, 16) and the electromagnetic driver (24, 26) into motional energy.

Dual Mode Transducer For A Portable Receiver

View page
US Patent:
55240615, Jun 4, 1996
Filed:
Aug 29, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/297730
Inventors:
Charles W. Mooney - Lake Worth FL
John M. McKee - Hillsboro Beach FL
Gerald E. Brinkley - West Palm Beach FL
Irving H. Holden - Boca Raton FL
Assignee:
Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
H04R 2500
US Classification:
381151
Abstract:
A dual mode transducer (600) includes an electromagnetic driver (604), an armature including upper and lower substantially parallel planar suspension members (610) coupled to the driver (604), and a magnetic motional mass (616) suspended between the suspension members (610). The suspension members (610) include a plurality of independent planar non-linear spring members (612) arranged regularly about the central region (614) within a perimeter region (608). The spring members (612) are defined by members having maximum opposing widths tapering to minimum opposing widths at midpoints thereon, the maximum opposing widths are coupled to the central region (614) and to the perimeter region (608). The motional mass (616) couples to the electromagnetic field which alternately moves the motional mass (616), the movement being transformed through the spring members (612) and the driver (604) into motional energy. A soundboard (1014), coupled to the driver (604), couples the motional energy to a user.

Mass Excited Acoustic Device

The foot (1108) is contiguous to the platform (1106) and to the soundboard (1102), and is substantially smaller in size than the platform (1106) and separates the platform (1106) from the soundboard (1102). The transducer (300) is coupled to the platform (1106) about the axis and converts an electrical input signal into motional energy generated in a direction parallel to the axis. The motional energy is delivered to the soundboard (1102) through the foot (1108) without substantially modifying the resonance frequency of the soundboard (1102).
