US Patent:
6440566, Aug 27, 2002
Filed:
Oct 1, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/408909
Inventors:
John Maligie - Long Beach CA
Thomas Malter - Huntington Beach CA
Assignee:
Airtech International, Inc. - Huntington Beach CA
International Classification:
B32B 2736
US Classification:
428412, 428516, 428520, 4284769, 4284758, 428483, 4284761, 4284763, 4284744, 15624411, 156325, 156326, 156327, 427508, 427487, 264319, 264330, 2643314, 26433115, 26433118, 26433121
Abstract:
This invention relates to a method for molding or curing a resin material using a multilayer release film as a barrier at the surface of the resin material. In one embodiment, the method comprises the surface of the resin material being in contact with the release film at a temperature of at least about 350Â F. (about 180Â C. ). Here, the release film is non-oriented and comprises: (1) an enhancement layer which comprises a thermoplastic material; and (2) a first release layer which has a composition that is different from the enhancement layer, comprises a polymeric material, and is releasable from the resin material after the resin material is molded or cured. This invention also relates to a release film that may be used, for example, with the above method. In one embodiment, the release film comprises 5 layers in the following order: (1) a first release layer which comprises polymethylpentene; (2) a first tie layer which comprises (i) polyethylene or modified polyethylene, and (ii) polypropylene or modified polypropylene; (3) an enhancement layer which comprises polyamide; (4) a second tie layer which comprises (i) polyethylene or modified polyethylene, and (ii) polypropylene or modified polypropylene; and (5) a second release layer which comprises polymethylpentene.

Thermoplastic Mandrels For Composite Fabrication

US Patent:
20100186899, Jul 29, 2010
Filed:
Jan 14, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/687258
Inventors:
Aubrey G. Jackson - Costa Mesa CA, US
John D. Maligie - Long Beach CA, US
International Classification:
B32B 37/10
B29C 47/06
US Classification:
156382, 156349, 2642091
Abstract:
A mandrel assembly that includes an elongated hollow structure comprising a thermoplastic material that is extrudable having a first end and a second end. A first end cap attached to the first end. A vent tube attached to the first end cap, the vent tube extending from the first end cap. A second end cap attached to the second end. The mandrel assembly adapted to shape and form a composite structure in or outside an autoclave.

Method For Producing Sheet Molding Compounds Utilizing A Multilayered, Multistructured, Multipolymer Release / Barrier Film

View page
US Patent:
56017707, Feb 11, 1997
Filed:
Sep 29, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/536684
Inventors:
John D. Maligie - Carson CA
Assignee:
Airtech International, Inc. - Carson CA
International Classification:
B29C 3920
B29C 4330
B32B 2708
B32B 2734
US Classification:
26417219
Abstract:
A method for producing SMC where a multilayered, multistructured, multipolymer release/barrier film is used as a polymeric film. The multilayered, multistructured, multipolymer release/barrier film is preferably produced by multilayered cast extrusion process. The tensile strength of the multilayered, multistructured, multipolymer release/barrier film should not be less than 8000 psi when tested to ASTM D882. Preferably, the film should inhibit styrene transmission at a rate no less than 2. times. 10. sup. -11 g. cm/cm. sup. 2 -hr. as tested per ASTM F739-81 and a surface tension level not to exceed 30 dynes/cm when tested in accordance with ASTM D2578.

Abstract:
A multilayer release film has a first outer layer comprising a first base polymer and having a first adhesion affinity, and a second outer layer comprising a second base polymer and an adhesion adjusting additive. The second outer layer has a second adhesion affinity that is different from the first adhesion affinity of the first outer layer. The difference in adhesion affinity between the first and second outer layers of the release film enable the film to exhibit full release characteristics from a molding tool (e.g., a metallic or composite surface material), but tight or controlled release from the surface of the part being cured or molded.
