Selective Backpressure Control For Multistage Switches

View page
US Patent:
6973032, Dec 6, 2005
Filed:
Dec 4, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/730408
Inventors:
Ross T. Casley - Palo Alto CA, US
John B. Levy - Los Altos CA, US
Assignee:
Cisco Technology, Inc. - San Jose CA
International Classification:
H04L012/56
US Classification:
370230, 370413
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for applying selective backpressure to control a multi-stage interconnection network (MIN). At one or more stages in the MIN, local information is used to define a queue status parameter for each local queue in the fabric. At the egress linecard, the upstream queue status parameter is periodically combined with the egress linecard's output queue status to generate a queue-specific backpressure signal. The backpressure signal continuously indicates to the ingress linecard that a specific fabric queue or queues is experiencing congestion and that the ingress linecard should therefore slow down or stop sending additional packets to the affected queue. Status computation mechanisms, which are state machines in one embodiment of the present invention, are incorporated in each switch element in at least the last stage of the switch fabric. In an alternate embodiment, the ingress linecard further combines the backpressure signal with its own local queue status to influence the initial queuing decision. In another alternate embodiment, queue status calculating mechanisms are present within one or more stages further upstream from the last stage of the switch fabric.

Bus For A Data Processing System With Overlapped Sequences

View page
US Patent:
42323665, Nov 4, 1980
Filed:
Oct 25, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/954601
Inventors:
John V. Levy - Palo Alto CA
David P. Rodgers - Acton MA
Robert E. Stewart - Stow MA
Richard J. Casabona - Stow MA
Assignee:
Digital Equipment Corporation - Maynard MA
International Classification:
G06F 946
US Classification:
364200
Abstract:
A digital data processing system including an interconnection for the various elements that constitute the system. Each element that connects to the interconnection is called a nexus. For one element to communicate with another element, the one element, as a commanding nexus, seeks control of the interconnection and then transmits a command and address of a storage location in the other element when it receives control of the interconnection. Control is then relinquished unless the one element is to send data to the other element whereupon the data is sent immediately. If data is to be retrieved, the other element retrieves the data, requests control of the interconnection and, when it receives control, transmits the data onto the interconnection with an identification of the one element. The one element then retrieves the data from the interconnection when it recognizes its own identification. If the other element is a memory element, it also contains storage file for storing commands and data if it already is operating in response to another element's command.

Distributed Arbitration Circuitry For Data Processing System

View page
US Patent:
42297915, Oct 21, 1980
Filed:
Oct 25, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/954456
Inventors:
John V. Levy - Palo Alto CA
David Rodgers - Acton MA
Robert E. Stewart - Stow MA
David Potter - Pepperell MA
Richard J. Casabona - Stow MA
Assignee:
Digital Equipment Corporation - Maynard MA
International Classification:
G06F 946
US Classification:
364200
Abstract:
A digital data processing system including an interconnection for the various elements that constitute the system. Each element that connects to the interconnection is called a nexus, and each nexus in the system can communicate with other nexuses on a priority basis. A central clocking circuit generates timing signals that control such communications by defining bus cycles on a synchronous basis and each nexus contains priority circuitry that operates in response to these signals. Each nexus that requires access to the interconnection asserts a transfer request signal at a predetermined time during each bus cycle. Priority arbitration circuitry in each nexus receives all such requests and samples them at another, later, time during each bus cycle. When a nexus is transmitting a request and no nexus with a higher priority is transmitting a request, that nexus takes control of the interconnection. A transfer during a subsequent bus cycle to another nexus can be prevented during certain types of transfers.
