Dec 5, 1995
Appl. No.:
08/567564
Inventors:
John Kollar - Wyckoff NJ, US
Assignee:
Redox Technologies Inc. - Winslow NJ
International Classification:
C07C 409/00
US Classification:
568561, 568578, 568568
Abstract:
A process is disclosed for the preparation of a dialkyl peroxide comprising reacting one or more members selected from the group consisting of an alkylating alcohol of the formula ROH, and an olefin of the formula (R)(R)C═C(R)(R), wherein R is C–Callyl, and R, R, R, and Rare independently selected from hydrogen and C–Calkyl; with a hydroperoxide of the formula ROOH, wherein Ris C–Callyl; in the presence of an effective amount of a substantially solid, insoluble, heterogenous acidic catalyst; followed by separation of the reaction mixture from said catalyst; wherein said catalyst has readily available acidity for organic reactions and exists in the solid phase in the processes of the invention, while the reactants in those processes, by contrast, exist in the liquid and/or gaseous phase, whence the catalyst is referred to as heterogeneous.

Process For The Preparation Of Adipic Acid And Other Aliphatic Dibasic Acids

View page
US Patent:
53211570, Jun 14, 1994
Filed:
Apr 26, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/053791
Inventors:
John Kollar - Wyckoff NJ
Assignee:
Redox Technologies Inc. - Wyckoff NJ
International Classification:
C07C 5131
US Classification:
562543
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of C. sub. 5 -C. sub. 8 aliphatic dibasic acids through oxidation of corresponding saturated cycloaliphatic hydrocarbons by (1) reacting, at a cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon conversion level of between about 7% and about 30%, (a) at least one saturated cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon having from 5 to 8 ring carbon atoms in the liquid phase and (b) an excess of oxygen gas or an oxygen-containing gas mixture in the presence of (c) less than 1. 5 moles of a solvent per mole of cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon (a), wherein said solvent comprises an organic acid containing only primary and/or secondary hydrogen atoms and (d) at least about 0. 002 mole per 1000 grams of reaction mixture of a polyvalent heavy metal catalyst; and (2) isolating the C. sub. 5 -C. sub. 8 aliphatic dibasic acid.

Process For Treating Reaction Mixtures By Chemical Reduction

View page
US Patent:
39475000, Mar 30, 1976
Filed:
Apr 5, 1974
Appl. No.:
5/458279
Inventors:
John Kollar - Wallington NJ
Assignee:
Halcon International, Inc. - New York NY
International Classification:
C07C 2710
C07C 2900
US Classification:
260618H
Abstract:
The present invention is concerned with the treatment of reaction mixtures which result from the metal catalyzed epoxidation of olefinically unsaturated compounds to the corresponding oxirane compound using organic hydroperoxides.

Method Of Producing Polyhydric Compounds

View page
US Patent:
39681750, Jul 6, 1976
Filed:
Nov 29, 1974
Appl. No.:
5/528102
Inventors:
John Kollar - Wyckoff NJ
Assignee:
Halcon International, Inc. - New York NY
International Classification:
C07C 2900
US Classification:
260635R
Abstract:
A polyhydric compound is produced by catalytically disproportionating a precursor which is a lower carboxylate ester of said compound containing at least one lower carboxylate group and at least one free hydroxyl group. Most preferably the invention relates to the production of a diol by the catalytic disproportionation of a lower carboxylate diester of the diol.

Process For The Industrial Production Of Ethylene Oxide And Aromatic Acid

View page
US Patent:
40467821, Sep 6, 1977
Filed:
May 8, 1975
Appl. No.:
5/575643
Inventors:
John Kollar - Wyckoff NJ
International Classification:
C07D30106
US Classification:
26034832
Abstract:
A process for the industrial production of ethylene oxide and an aromatic acid by reacting oxygen with ethylene and a methyl aromatic compound in the liquid phase. Oxygen and ethylene are passed into a liquid mono or poly methyl aromatic compound and reacted therein to produce ethylene oxide and methyl aromatic oxidates. The aromatic oxidates are then further oxidized to produce aromatic acids. When the methyl aromatic compound used is toluene the acid produced is benzoic acid, from p-xylene, terephthalic acid is produced; from m-xylene isophthalic acid is produced; and from pseudocumene (1, 2, 4 trimethyl benzene) trimellitic acid is produced.

Process For Preparing Glycols From Their Ester Precursors

View page
US Patent:
39857956, Oct 12, 1976
Filed:
Dec 30, 1974
Appl. No.:
5/537298
Inventors:
John Kollar - Wyckoff NJ
Assignee:
Halcon International, Inc. - New York NY
International Classification:
C07D 6705
C07D 2900
US Classification:
260497R
Abstract:
Glycol esters of an olefin are prepared by contacting an olefin and a molecular oxygen containing gas in a carboxylic acid medium in the presence of a catalyst. Selectivities to the desired glycol esters are improved by treating the viscous residue and the precursor light components separated from the oxidation effluent by contacting them with water. In a preferred embodiment both residue and precursor light components streams are fed to the same zone wherein they are converted to additional glycol.

Process For Producing Ethylene Glycol

View page
US Patent:
43932525, Jul 12, 1983
Filed:
Mar 26, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/362433
Inventors:
John Kollar - Wyckoff NJ
Assignee:
Redox Technologies, Inc. - Wyckoff NJ
International Classification:
C07C 3120
US Classification:
568852
Abstract:
Ethylene glycol is prepared by reacting methanol and an organic peroxide of the formula R--O--O--R. sub. 1, wherein R and R. sub. 1 are each an alkyl or aralkyl group having 3 to 12 carbon atoms, in the presence of a minor amount of a basic material. Preferably, formaldehyde is present as a reactant in the presence of water. The presence of the basic material reduces the hydrogen ions which are formed and thus reduces the amount of methylal produced.

Abstract:
Ethylene glycol is prepared by reacting methanol, formaldehyde and from greater than 6 to about 25 weight percent of an organic peroxide in the presence of about 0. 5 to about 35 weight percent of water based on the feed composition, the amount of water within said range being correlated with the peroxide content. The organic peroxide has the formula R--O--O--R. sup. 1 wherein R and R. sup. 1 are each an alkyl or aralkyl group having 3 to 12 carbon atoms.
