Laminated Foam Structures With Enhanced Properties

View page
US Patent:
20010000568, May 3, 2001
Filed:
Nov 30, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/728128
Inventors:
John Bambara - Osterville MA, US
Richard Bambara - Cooperstown NY, US
Scott Smith - Osterville MA, US
Thomas Smith - Austin TX, US
International Classification:
B32B003/00
B32B003/26
B32B005/18
US Classification:
083/701000, 428/316600, 428/218000, 156/077000
Abstract:
The invention relates to foam structures with enhanced physical properties which can be used in the areas of packaging, athletics, water sports, and construction. In general, the structures are laminated polymer foams that include a core of a low density foam and one or more skins of relatively high density foam covering the core. The skins provide improved physical properties to the foam structures by improving the flexural strength, resistance to bending, and resulting damage from bending in the laminated foam structure while modestly increasing the weight of the laminated structure, for example. Uses of the foam structures include, but are not limited to, packaging materials, gym mats, body boards, or eaves fillers. The skin can act as a hinge to fold a die cut piece into a collapsible packaging system.

Silane-Grafted Materials For Solid And Foam Applications

US Patent:
20030087976, May 8, 2003
Filed:
Nov 9, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/986776
Inventors:
John Bambara - Osterville MA, US
Matthew Kozma - Osterville MA, US
Robert Hurley - Centerville MA, US
Assignee:
Sentinel Products Corp., a New York corporation
International Classification:
C08F210/00
US Classification:
521/144000, 521/079000, 521/082000, 525/063000, 525/064000, 525/070000, 525/191000, 264/045700, 264/045900, 264/232000, 264/239000
Abstract:
New cross-linked polymeric foam compositions, and methods for making the same, are provided. The new compositions utilize novel cross-linked polyolefin copolymers and show improvements in strength, toughness, flexibility, heat resistance and heat-sealing temperature ranges as compared to conventional low density polyethylene compositions. The new compositions also show processing improvements over linear low density polyethylene. The novel polyolefins, which are essentially linear, comprise ethylene polymerized with at least one alpha-unsaturated C3 to C20 olefinic comonomer, and optionally at least one C3 to C20 polyene, and exhibit, in an uncross-linked sense, a resin density in the range of about 0.86 g/cmto about 0.96 g/cm, a melt index in the range of about 0.5 dg/min to about 100 dg/min, a molecular weight distribution in the range of from about 1.5 to about 3.5, and a composition distribution breadth index greater than about 45 percent. The polyolefins are silane-grafted to enhance the physical properties and processability of the resins. Slow silane-grafted materials exhibit enhanced physical and processing properties.

Polypropylene Foam And Foam Core Structure

View page
US Patent:
20050159496, Jul 21, 2005
Filed:
Mar 7, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/506856
Inventors:
John Bambara - Osterville MA, US
Robert Beckwith - Cummaquid MA, US
Robert Hooper - Sagamore Beach MA, US
Robert Hurley - Centerville MA, US
International Classification:
C08J009/00
US Classification:
521050000
Abstract:
One or more external surfaces of an extruded foam are coated by co-extruding a skin of polymer on the surface to reduce the diffusion the foaming gases out of the cells of the solidifying polymer foam. The sealing effect can involve coating one side of the extruded foam (AB foam) or both sides (ABA form). The skins can be solid or foamed. Alternatively, a cylinder is formed from an annular die and, preferably, a cylindrical cooling mandrel. By extruding and drawing the cylinder of foam onto a cooled cylindrical mandrel, which expands the diameter of the cylinder, the optimum physical properties of the structure can be achieved. This is because the foam structure is stretched in longitudinal and lateral directions. Preferable, the foaming polymer has “inherent melt strength” and “strain hardening” so that the foam cells are more consistent in size and shape. The preferred polymers are polypropylene or polystyrene.
