Optical System For Lighting Fixture

View page
US Patent:
50016164, Mar 19, 1991
Filed:
Mar 16, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/495254
Inventors:
Joel C. Gehly - McKean PA
A. Michael Smith - LaFayette CO
Assignee:
American Sterilizer Company - Erie PA
International Classification:
F21V 700
US Classification:
362308
Abstract:
A lighting fixture to illuminate a target surface, particulary a surgical site, is provided which includes a light source, a reflector superposing and partially circumscribing the light source, a cylindrical filter surrounding the light source coaxial to the axis of symmetry of the lighting fixture and a refractor positioned beneath the reflector through which the light reflected from the reflector must pass to reach the target surface. The refractor is divided into a plurality of portions which radiate outwardly from the axis of symmetry. Each portion includes first, second and third prism means having individual prism members of varying configuration for focusing the light to first, second and third areas, respectively, within a cylinder of light defined by the light passing through the refractor, to provide small, medium and large patterns respectively, of the cylinder of light when it impinges upon the target surface. Means are provided for selectively blocking light from passing through certain areas of the refractor to achieve the desired pattern.

Reflector For Multiple Source Lighting Fixture

View page
US Patent:
46176195, Oct 14, 1986
Filed:
Oct 2, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/783379
Inventors:
Joel C. Gehly - McKean PA
Assignee:
American Sterilizer Company - Erie PA
International Classification:
A61G 1300
F21V 3300
US Classification:
362804
Abstract:
An improvement suitable for incorporation into a lighting fixture having a plurality of light source means for emitting light rays and at least one reflector wherein the one reflector superposes the light source means in a partially circumscribing, radially spaced relationship about the axis of symmetry of the lighting fixture to receive light rays and to project them onto a work surface. The improvement is a second reflector in axial alignment with, and rotatably mounted about, the axis of symmetry. The second reflector is positioned beneath the light source means and has a plurality of distinct surface sections, each of the surface sections being associated with one of the light source means for receiving the light rays emitted therefrom and projecting the light rays onto the one reflector. Each surface section has two radially adjacent portions. One portion has a textured finish for diffusing the light rays and the other portion has a specular finish for intensifying the light rays.

Redundant Lamp Mechanism

View page
US Patent:
50329626, Jul 16, 1991
Filed:
Mar 16, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/495246
Inventors:
Joel Gehly - McKean PA
David Zolner - Fairview PA
David Mackowski - North East PA
Assignee:
American Sterilizer Company - Erie PA
International Classification:
F21V 1904
US Classification:
362254
Abstract:
A mechanism for positioning one of a plurality of lamps, each carried by a lamp socket, at a desired focal point of an optical system is comprised of a first lamp socket positioned in an operative position such that a lamp carried by that socket will be at a desired focal point of the optical system. At least one other lamp socket is positioned in an inoperative position. A mechanism for enabling movement of the first lamp socket from the operative position to an inoperative position while simultaneously moving the other lamp socket from the inoperative position to the operative position is provided. The present invention enables a failed lamp to be replaced by a backup lamp in such a manner that no degradation or change in optical performance occurs.

Lighting System

View page
US Patent:
54972957, Mar 5, 1996
Filed:
Jun 14, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/075996
Inventors:
Joel C. Gehly - McKean PA
Assignee:
Lumitek Development, Inc. - Girard PA
International Classification:
F21V 704
US Classification:
362 32
Abstract:
A high illumination level lighting system. The system comprises a light source module and a lighthead. The light source module is remote from the lighthead. An elongated light piping member has a first end in said light source module and a second end adjacent said light head. Light energy from the light source module is transported by the light piping member to the lighthead which collects the light energy from the second end of the light piping member, controls it and directs it in a desired pattern onto a site to be illuminated. A support assembly is provided for the light head. The support assembly may hold the light head in fixed position, or it may be adjustable so as to hold the light head in adjusted positions. The light source module may be provided with filter elements to eliminate unwanted wave lengths, heat, and to provide color temperature control. A control panel is provided to turn the light source of the light source module on and off, and to control light intensity and color temperature, if desired.

Lamp Change Mechanism

View page
US Patent:
50994050, Mar 24, 1992
Filed:
Mar 16, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/495252
Inventors:
Joel C. Gehly - McKean PA
James M. Szumigala - Erie PA
Assignee:
American Sterilizer Company - Erie PA
International Classification:
F21L 1512
US Classification:
362400
Abstract:
An apparatus is provided for a lighthead which allows the lamp to be serviced without removing any components of the lighthead. The invention includes a lamp socket connected to the handle of the lighthead. The handle can be displaced from an operative position to expose the lamp for maintenance while remaining attached to the lighthead to prevent damage or loss of the components.

Removable Lampholder

View page
US Patent:
45787425, Mar 25, 1986
Filed:
Oct 24, 1984
Appl. No.:
6/664356
Inventors:
Roy S. Klein - Erie PA
Joel C. Gehly - McKean PA
Joseph T. Sestak - Erie PA
Assignee:
American Sterilizer Company - Erie PA
International Classification:
F21V 2502
US Classification:
362294
Abstract:
A lampholder for insertion into and removal from an electrically powered lighting unit which includes a socket for receiving the lamp, means for communicating electrical power from the unit to the lamp, means for releasably engaging the unit, and a cap structured to prevent cracking superposing the socket and having an upper surface and a lower surface proximate the socket. A plurality of windows through the cap of a sufficient size to vent heat emitted from the lamp, together with the heat resistant material from which the cap is formed, prevent the upper surface from exceeding a predetermined temperature. An insulation layer is preferably disposed between the lower surface and the socket.

Multiple Source Lighting Fixture

View page
US Patent:
46512578, Mar 17, 1987
Filed:
Jul 15, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/754704
Inventors:
Joel C. Gehly - McKean PA
Assignee:
American Sterilizer Company - Erie PA
International Classification:
