William C. Moyer - Dripping Springs TX
Jeffrey W. Scott - Austin TX
Michael D. Fitzsimmons - Austin TX
Assignee:
Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
G06F 1324
US Classification:
710260, 712221, 712244
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for processing multi-cycle instructions. In one embodiment, the method includes beginning execution of a multi-cycle instruction by the processing device, and, during execution of the multi-cycle instruction, comparing a threshold value to a count value that indicates a number of remaining cycles before completion of the multi-cycle instruction. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes a processing unit. The processing unit includes an interrupt control module that has an interrupt request signal input and a second input to receive a multi-cycle instruction interrupt signal. The multi-cycle instruction interrupt signal is to indicate an interruptible interval when an interrupt of a multi-cycle instruction is permitted prior to completion of the multi-cycle instruction.

Separation Of Ring Detection Functions Across Isolation Barrier For Minimum Power

View page
US Patent:
6456712, Sep 24, 2002
Filed:
Mar 4, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/034453
Inventors:
Jerrell P. Hein - Driftwood TX
Jeffrey W. Scott - Austin TX
Navdeep S. Sooch - Austin TX
David R. Welland - Austin TX
Assignee:
Silicon Laboratories Inc. - Austin TX
International Classification:
H04M 100
US Classification:
37939901, 379373, 379377, 379398, 379405, 379412, 379379, 375257, 375219, 375222, 375 36, 375121, 375220
Abstract:
A communication system of the present invention utilizes ring detection circuitry on both sides of an isolation barrier. More particularly, the ring detection circuitry may include ring burst circuitry on the phone line side of the isolation barrier and ringer timing circuits on the powered side of the isolation barrier. The digital burst peak signal may be transmitted through the isolation barrier to the ringer timing circuits. By splitting the ring detection circuitry so that the ringer timing circuits are placed on the powered side of the isolation barriers, a significant reduction in the power usage on the phone line side of the barrier related to the ring detection function may occur. The outputs of the ringing timing circuits may be provided to circuits on either side of the isolation barrier. Thus, the ring detection function may be accomplished in a system utilizing an efficient bidirectional capacitive barrier while still minimizing power usage on the line side of the barrier.

Inventors:
William C. Moyer - Dripping Springs TX
John Arends - Austin TX
Jeffrey W. Scott - Austin TX
Assignee:
Motorola, Inc. - Schaumburg IL
International Classification:
G06F 1500
US Classification:
712 34
Abstract:
A processor ( ) to coprocessor ( ) interface supporting multiple coprocessors ( ) utilizes compiler generatable software type function call and return, instruction execute, and variable load and store interface instructions. Data is moved between the processor ( ) and coprocessor ( ) on a bi-directional shared bus ( ) either implicitly through register snooping and broadcast, or explicitly through function call and return and variable load and store interface instructions. The load and store interface instructions allow selective memory address preincrementation. The bi-directional bus ( ) is potentially driven both ways on each clock cycle. The interface separates interface instruction decode and execution. Pipelined operation is provided by indicating decoded instruction discard by negating a decode signal before an execute signal is asserted.

International Classification:
G06F 930
US Classification:
712205, 712210
Abstract:
Embodiments of the present invention relate to instruction fetching in data processing systems. One aspect involves a data processor ( ) to execute instructions and to fetch instructions from a memory ( ) according to a fetch size. This data processor ( ) comprises a first input ( ) to receive instructions, control logic ( ) to decode the instructions, and an instruction pipeline ( ) coupled to the first input ( ) and the control logic ( ). The instruction pipeline ( ) is responsive to a first signal ( ) to set the fetch size to one of a first size and a second size. The data processor ( ) therefore allows an instruction fetch policy to be altered based on the characteristics of an accessed device in order to achieve improved performance.

Processor Having Selective Branch Prediction

View page
US Patent:
6859875, Feb 22, 2005
Filed:
Jun 12, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/592449
Inventors:
William C. Moyer - Dripping Springs TX, US
Jeffrey W. Scott - Austin TX, US
Assignee:
Freescale Semiconductor, Inc. - Austin TX
International Classification:
G06F009/32
G06F009/38
US Classification:
712239, 712233
Abstract:
A data system capable of selecting whether to utilize address prediction based on the state of an address prediction enable signal. When employing address prediction, the outcome of branch instructions are presumed prior to the resolution of the instruction. When not using address prediction, the system waits until a branch instruction is resolved before fetching the next address to be executed. At least one embodiment of a method and data system disclosed herein makes use of the different setup timing available when employing prediction and non-prediction modes of operation.

Data Processing System Having Redirecting Circuitry And Method Therefor

View page
US Patent:
6865667, Mar 8, 2005
Filed:
Mar 5, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/798390
Inventors:
William C. Moyer - Dripping Springs TX, US
Jeffrey W. Scott - Austin TX, US
John H. Arends - Austin TX, US
Assignee:
Freescale Semiconductors, Inc. - Austin TX
International Classification:
G06F009/00
US Classification:
712234
Abstract:
Embodiments of the present invention relate generally to data processing systems having redirecting circuitry. For example, one embodiment relates to redirecting program flow in a data processing system having a data processor for executing instructions, and circuitry that redirects program flow by identifying an address corresponding to an instruction provided to the data processor for which program execution should be redirected when the instruction is decoded by the data processor. The circuitry also generates a control field having an offset corresponding to the address and using the control field to determine when program flow should be redirected. The circuitry creates a redirected address value by combining a portion of the control field with a predetermined address. The data processor implements redirection of program flow by utilizing the redirected address value. Embodiments also relate to redirecting data accesses and to redirecting program flow while remaining in a same execution context.
