Software: I enjoy learning new languages and design patterns. I've been learning new languages every year since 1981. Building the user-experience layer is my favorite part of application design. Hardware: Well structured, highly reusable, modern Verilog is nice, but the thrill of thinking on your toes while trying to meet a blistering fast schedule is probably a bit more fun. Web: Building AJAX interfaces based on MooTools has been my latest hobby. Getting them to work well in old version of IE6 is the real challenge. Personal: Backpacking, photography, drawing/painting/sketching, and playing with my two sons.

Abstract:
A synchronization detector including a phase detector and a distance metric calculator. The phase detector uses the preamble readback signal to estimate the bit periods and outputs a signal indicative of this estimate. This signal is sued by the distance metric calculator to limit its search for the synchronization mark to every mth bit position, where m is a predetermined integer greater than one (1).

Abstract:
A system comprises an encoder, a precoder, a PRML channel, a detector, and a decoder. An input signal is received by the encoder. The encoder generates a code string by adding one or more bits and outputs the code string to the precoder. The encoder applies encoding such that the code string after passing through the precoder has a Hamming distance greater than one to eliminate error events with a small distance at the output of the PRML channel. The present invention also provides codes that after precoding have Hamming distance of 2 and 0 mod 3 number of ones. These codes when used over a PRML channel in an interleaved manner preclude +/-(. . . 010-10. . . ) error events and error events +/-(. . . 01000-10. . . ). The code string also has a predetermined minimum number of ones at the output of the PRML channel to help derive a clock from the input signal.
