Inventors:
Hengda Liu - Beaverton OR, US
Joseph Xie - Shanghai, CN
Assignee:
Rudolph Technologies, Inc. - Flanders NJ
International Classification:
H01L021/8238
US Classification:
438/200000
Abstract:
An optically-based system and method are disclosed for detecting surface pits and their average depth in a metal film by an examination of pulse shape in a reflected probe beam pulse. Also disclosed is an optically-based system and method for detecting an occurrence of a failure in a CMP process by detecting surface pits in a metal film by an examination of pulse shape in a reflected probe beam pulse. Also disclosed is an optically-based system and method for providing quality indications to a CMP process for enabling control of the CMP process by detecting surface pits in a metal film by an examination of pulse shape in a reflected probe beam pulse, where the pulse shape has a twin peak shape that is indicative of a presence of a surface pit. Control of the CMP process includes controlling at least one of polish pressure, speed, polish pad life and polish slurry composition and chemistry. Also disclosed is an optically-based system and method to enable semiconductor process improvements using an optical metrology system that is suitably programmed to recognize and detect the presence of an abnormal twin or double peak that is indicative of a surface defect (e.g., pitting) in a film (e.g., a metal (Cu) film).

Porous Metal Foam Structures And Methods

View page
US Patent:
20080199720, Aug 21, 2008
Filed:
Feb 21, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/677140
Inventors:
Hengda Liu - Warsaw IN, US
Assignee:
DePuy Products, Inc. - Warsaw IN
International Classification:
B32B 1/00
B22F 1/00
B22F 5/10
US Classification:
428613, 419 2, 419 62
Abstract:
Porous metal foam structures and methods of making the same are described. Preferred methods include the steps of combining a liquid-extractable, pore-forming agent with a metal powder in the presence of a liquid in which the pore-forming agent is soluble, thereby forming a mixture, compacting the mixture to form a green body, and dissolving the pore-forming agent from the green body to produce a metal skeleton.

Open Celled Metal Implants With Roughened Surfaces And Method For Roughening Open Celled Metal Implants

View page
US Patent:
20090326674, Dec 31, 2009
Filed:
Jun 19, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/487698
Inventors:
Hengda Derek Liu - Warsaw IN, US
Sophie Xiaofan Yang - Warsaw IN, US
Assignee:
DEPUY PRODUCTS, INC. - Warsaw IN
International Classification:
A61F 2/28
C23F 1/02
US Classification:
623 2355, 216109
Abstract:
The present invention concerns processes for etching a porous titanium foam or porous titanium alloy foam where a clean, dry foam product is immersed into an aqueous acid solution comprising about 0.5 to about 5 volume percent HF and about 5 to about 20 volume percent HNOfor a time sufficient to achieve a desired surface roughness and heating the etched foam to remove residual titanates. The etching process increases the porosity at the surface of the foam but the etchant does not penetrate fully into the interior of the foam so that adequate mechanical properties are maintained. The etching process also increases the coefficient of friction at the foam surface. The foam may comprise an open-celled orthopaedic or dental implant, or may comprise a coating on the surface of a substrate.

Mixtures For Forming Porous Constructs

US Patent:
20100098574, Apr 22, 2010
Filed:
Aug 13, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/540617
Inventors:
Hengda D. Liu - Warsaw IN, US
Bryan Smith - , US
Richard King - Warsaw IN, US
International Classification:
B22F 3/12
B22F 1/00
B22F 3/02
US Classification:
419 10, 419 62, 75230, 75252
Abstract:
Provided are methods comprising at least one metal powder with an extractable material and a composition comprising a polyol, a hydrophilic polymer, or both in order to form a mixture in which the metal powder and the extractable material assume respective positions. The composition functions as a homogenizing agent that allows the mixture to remain well-mixed for extended periods of time under ambient conditions. Also provided are green bodies and porous constructs, including implants, that are made in accordance with the disclosed methods. The green bodies and porous constructs have a substantially uniform porosity that is at least partially attributable to the ability of the composition to maintain the metal powder and the extractable material in their respective positions prior to sintering.

One of the metal implant components has an articulation surface for articulation with the bearing. The other metal implant component has a mounting surface for supporting the bearing. One of the metal implant components includes a solid metal portion and a porous metal portion. The porous metal portion has surfaces with different characteristics, such as roughness, to improve bone fixation, ease removal of the implant component in a revision surgery, reduce soft tissue irritation, improve the strength of a sintered bond between the solid and porous metal portions, or reduce or eliminate the possibility of blood traveling through the porous metal portion into the joint space. A method of making the joint prosthesis is also disclosed. The invention may also be applied to discrete porous metal implant components, such as augment.
