Composite Golf Club Shaft Having Low Moment Of Inertia

View page
US Patent:
57760080, Jul 7, 1998
Filed:
Dec 30, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/774466
Inventors:
Harry C. Lundberg - Ramsey NJ
International Classification:
A63B 5310
A63B 5312
US Classification:
473320
Abstract:
In a preferred embodiment, a shaft for a golf club, the shaft including: tip and butt ends defined at opposite distal ends of the shaft's length; and the shaft having a balance point axially spaced from the tip end a distance in the range of from about 56 percent to about 58. 5 percent of the shaft's length. In another preferred embodiment, there is provided a composite shaft for a golf club, the shaft including: tip and butt ends defined at opposite distal ends of the shaft's length; the shaft being tubular and tapering generally from a larger diameter at the butt end to a smaller diameter at the tip end; the shaft being constructed primarily of a first material having a first modulus of elasticity; and two, spaced apart cylinders of a second, reinforcing material, having a second modulus of elasticity greater than the first modulus of elasticity, disposed axially in the first material, the cylinders being disposed either side of a point axially spaced from the tip end a distance in the range of from about 45 percent to about 52 percent of the shaft's length.

Arch Reinforced Golf Club Head

US Patent:
58399755, Nov 24, 1998
Filed:
Oct 15, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/950425
Inventors:
Harry C. Lundberg - Ramsey NJ
Assignee:
Black Rock Golf Corporation - Englewood CO
International Classification:
A63B 5304
US Classification:
473346
Abstract:
A golf club head made of metal has a hollow construction with a pair of arcuate reinforcing ribs extending in horizontal and vertical planes with the arcuate ribs terminating at the striking plate of the golf club where a base structure of reinforcing ribs interconnect the ends of the arcuate ribs. The rib structure is molded integrally with the walls of the hollow club head and function to desirably reinforce the club head to prevent collapse or other distortion while providing a relatively large sweet spot and preventing undesired torque on the club head when a golf ball is hit at an off center location on the striking plate.

Golf Club Set

US Patent:
52956865, Mar 22, 1994
Filed:
Jan 25, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/008393
Inventors:
Harry C. Lundberg - Ramsey NJ
Assignee:
S2 Golf Inc. - Fairfield NJ
International Classification:
A63B 5304
US Classification:
273 77A
Abstract:
An improved set of golf clubs has iron club heads in a correlated set such that the weight of longer shafted, less lofted clubs is concentrated more towards the heel of the head, while the weight of the shorter shafted, more lofted clubs is concentrated more towards the toe of the head. When viewed face on, with the sole of the club on a level surface, it will be noted that the vertical plane of the center of gravity of each individual head shall be shifted towards the toe or the heel, as the case may be, with such weight concentrations. The result is a set of correlated golf club heads which: (a) have less inertial drag in the longer, less lofted clubs, (b) have more inertial drag in the shorter, more lofted clubs, and (c) can utilize the gear effect phenomenon inherent in golf clubs more effectively.

Golf Club Head

US Patent:
52956890, Mar 22, 1994
Filed:
Jan 11, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/002708
Inventors:
Harry C. Lundberg - Ramsey NJ
Assignee:
S2 Golf Inc. - Fairfield NJ
International Classification:
A63B 5304
US Classification:
273167H
Abstract:
A golf club head has a pyramid-shaped truss located within an interior of the club head. The truss employs a triangular base placed directly behind a club head striking plate, with a plurality of struts extending from the base to converge at an apex at the tail of the club head. Two of the struts are preferably affixed to an inner side of a club head sole. The struts may be tubular or solid. The truss prevents distortion of the club head at head-ball impact, and also reduces the tendency of the club head to twist about its center of gravity when contact is made with the ball. The truss is particularly applicable to hollow, metal "wood" club heads, which typically must be designed with thinner striking plates. The truss also facilitates manufacture of composite graphite club heads by inexpensive injection molding techniques without compromising club head strength.
