Abstract:
Disclosed are lubricating oil compositions containing from about 0. 01 weight percent to about 5 weight percent of oil-soluble multifunctional additive having the general formula ##STR1## where A. X. sub. 1 is --S--CS--OR, --S--CS--NR. sub. 2, --S--PS--(OR). sub. 2, or --O--P(OR). sub. 2, and X. sub. 2 and X. sub. 3 are chlorine, bromine, --S--CS--OR, --S--CS--NR. sub. 2, --S--PS--(OR). sub. 2, --OP(OR). sub. 2, or R; or B. X. sub. 1 is --S--CS--OR, --S--CS--NR. sub. 2, --S--PS--(OR). sub. 2, or --O--P--(OR). sub. 2, and X. sub. 2 and X. sub. 3 are chlorine, bromine, --S--CS--OR, --S--CS--NR. sub. 2, --S--PS--(OR). sub. 2, --O--P--(OR). sub. 2 or --HN--R' where R comprises hydrocarbyl groups or chlorine, bromine or hydroxy substituted hydrocarbyl; and R' comprises hydrocarbyl, or hydroxy, amine or amide substituted hydrocarbyl. The lubricating oil compositions have improved extreme pressure, dispersancy or anti-oxidant properties.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Disclosed are a process for manufacturing metal dithiophospates, and metal dithiophosphate compositions. The process for manufacturing zinc, barium, cadmium, magnesium or nickel dithiophosphates comprises reacting phosphorus pentasulfide with one or more alcohols to form a dithiophosphoric acid; neutralizing said dithiophosphoric acid with zinc, barium, cadmium, magnesium or nickel base in the presence of an acidic promoter; and reacting a substantial portion of the excess acidic promoter with a weak base. The metal dithiophosphates and lubricating oils containing said dithiophosphates are also disclosed.

Abstract:
A process is described to make a dihydroxydiphenol sulfone product with a 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenol sulfone purity in excess of 90 wt. % by reaction of phenol and concentrated sulfuric acid in a solvent mixture containing a lower-boiling and a higher-boiling hydrocarbon, removal by azeotropic distillation of water, hydrocarbon, and phenol, phase separation of the distillate, and return of at least the phenol to the reaction at a rate which maintains a phenol to sulfuric acid mol ratio in the reaction of at least 2 to 1.
