Induction Sealed High Pressure Lamp Bulb

View page
US Patent:
6566814, May 20, 2003
Filed:
Apr 24, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/841414
Inventors:
David W. Johnston - Kensington NH
Gregory Zaslavsky - Marblehead MA
Dana L. Caldwell - Middleton MA
Assignee:
Osram Sylvania Inc. - Danvers MA
International Classification:
H01J 6136
US Classification:
313623, 313624, 313625, 313576
Abstract:
A high pressure, lamp may be made in a pressure vessel by using an induction coil to melt an edge portion of a sealing wafer pressed against the circumference of an opening in the body of the lamp envelope. The pressure vessel and the lamp envelope are filled with desired fill materials. Induction heating is carried out by the induction coil and induction receiver that presses against the wafer, the lamp envelope or both to hold the melting piece or pieces in contact. The induction receiver may be fused to the lamp body forming a functional part of the overall lamp structure. The preferred resulting lamp includes a bonded metal piece that can be conveniently used for electrical or mechanical coupling or positioning of the lamp with respect to a base.

Method Of Assembling A Ceramic Body

View page
US Patent:
6620272, Sep 16, 2003
Filed:
Feb 15, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/077504
Inventors:
Gregory Zaslavsky - Marblehead MA
Christopher S. Nordahl - Beverly MA
Joseph V. Lima - Salem MA
Arlene Hecker - Beverly MA
Assignee:
Osram Sylvania Inc. - Danvers MA
International Classification:
B29C 6506
US Classification:
156 735, 156 82, 1562728, 156292, 1563082
Abstract:
A method for making a ceramic body is provided wherein the ceramic components are joined in their green state. The method includes applying heat to the surfaces to be joined to cause a localized melting of the binder. The surfaces are then brought together and joined by alternately applying compression and stretching. The method is particularly advantageous for forming unitary ceramic arc tube bodies for high intensity discharge (HID) lighting applications.

Filed:
Sep 26, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/963760
Inventors:
William D. Koenigsberg - Concord MA
Miguel Galvez - Danvers MA
Gregory Zaslavsky - Marblehead MA
Zeya Krasko - Peabody MA
Joseph V. Lima - Salem MA
Assignee:
Osram Sylvania Inc. - Danvers MA
International Classification:
H01J 1716
US Classification:
313634, 313573, 313638
Abstract:
A quartz arc tube for a metal halide lamps and its method of making are described. The quartz arc tube has a cylindrical design which promotes a nearly symmetric longitudinal surface temperature profile during operation. The profile has a maximum temperature of about 900Â C. which allows for longer operating life at high average wall loadings.

Discharge Lamp Having A Fluted Electrical Feed-Through

View page
US Patent:
6774547, Aug 10, 2004
Filed:
Jun 26, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/606532
Inventors:
Gregory Zaslavsky - Marblehead MA
James Avallon - Beverly MA
Joanne Browne - Newburyport MA
Assignee:
Osram Sylvania Inc. - Danvers MA
International Classification:
H01J 196
US Classification:
313285, 313289, 313623, 313574, 140 715, 140 716
Abstract:
A fluted feed-through for a discharge lamp includes a fluted ceramic core with plural channels and plural individual molybdenum or tungsten wires running in different ones of the plural channels. The wires are twisted together at the ends of the feed-through. The feed-through is insertable into a capillary tube of a ceramic discharge lamp. The wires of the feed-through have a different thermal coefficient of expansion than the ceramic discharge lamp. The wires are thin enough so that the absolute magnitude of the thermal coefficients of expansion is sufficiently small to prevent seal cracks and leaking.
