Shaft Seal With Helical Pumping Element

View page
US Patent:
40945197, Jun 13, 1978
Filed:
Aug 20, 1974
Appl. No.:
5/499070
Inventors:
William O. Heyn - Barrington IL
Glenn W. Peisker - Barrington IL
Assignee:
Chicago Rawhide Manufacturing Company - Elgin IL
International Classification:
B61F 1522
US Classification:
277134
Abstract:
An oil or grease seal unit of the radially acting type which includes a relatively stiff mounting portion and a relatively flexible elastomeric sealing lip portion adapted to surround or be surrounded by a relatively movable machine member or element to prevent passage of fluid, such as oil or the like, axially along the shaft to the exterior of the region to be sealed. A novel form of pumping element is provided whereby a strong pumping or oil return action from the exterior of the sealed region to the interior thereof may be accomplished by the provision of generally helically disposed, rib-like pumping elements lying on one frusto-conical surface of the sealing lip. The pumping elements are disposed at an angle both to the direction of shaft rotation and to a shaft axis, and are arranged to blend into the intended area of contact between the seal lip and the shaft, that is, the static lip formed by the convergence of inner and outer frusto-conical surfaces. Pumping action remains relatively constant throughout the working life of the seal.

Unitized Oil Seals

US Patent:
44484267, May 15, 1984
Filed:
Jul 6, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/280888
Inventors:
Ronald A. Jackowski - Algonquin IL
Glenn W. Peisker - Barrington IL
Assignee:
Chicago Rawhide Manufacturing Company - Elgin IL
International Classification:
F16J 1534
US Classification:
277 37
Abstract:
A unitized oil seal with inner and outer rigid casings. A seal lip body with primary and auxiliary sealing lips is bonded to the outer casing, and the sealing lip cooperates with an axial flange on the inner casing to provide a fluid-tight seal band area. The outer casing includes an auxiliary rubber or metal element which positions a locking flange on the inner casing against axial displacement. The axial flange on the inner casing has a radially inturned edge on the end opposite the locking flange to facilitate assembly. The inside diameter of the inner casing and the outside diameter of the outer casing include rubber or plastic sleeves for ease of installation on an associated sealed mechanism. The present invention relates generally to oil seals, and more particularly, to so-called unitized oil seals intended specifically for motor vehicles and related applications. By "unitized" as used herein is meant oil seals in which the primary sealing lip portion and the portion with which such sealing lip is associated in use to form a relatively movable or so-called primary sealare both incorporated within a single oil seal which is sold as a unit.

Composite Teflon Helix Seal

US Patent:
45014310, Feb 26, 1985
Filed:
Dec 19, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/563149
Inventors:
Glenn Peisker - Barrington IL
Keith Christiansen - Fox River Grove IL
Gil Jaime - West Dundee IL
Assignee:
Chicago Rawhide Manufacturing Company - Elgin IL
International Classification:
F16J 1532
US Classification:
277134
Abstract:
A fluorocarbon seal including a formed resin ring element which is adapted to serve both as a primary lip and an auxiliary or excluder lip, in which at least a portion of the lip surface contains hydrodynamic formations consisting of grooves or the like indented or debossed surfaces rather than upstanding or protruding vanes or ribs, and wherein the resinous seal ring element as a whole is in the form of a generally frusto-conical ring having an intermediate portion thereof bonded by an annular collar unit to an associated casing.

US Patent:
46891900, Aug 25, 1987
Filed:
Oct 19, 1984
Appl. No.:
6/662685
Inventors:
Glenn Peisker - Barrington IL
Keith Christiansen - Fox River Grove IL
Gil Jaime - West Dundee IL
Assignee:
Chicago Rawhide Mfg. Co. - Elgin IL
International Classification:
B29C 3314
B29C 3910
B32B 3106
US Classification:
264159
Abstract:
A method of manufacturing a composite seal assembly. A primary sealing ring in generally frustoconical form is cut from a cylindrical billet of a resinous fluorocarbon material so as to have first and second principal surfaces each inclined with respect to the axis of the billet. The ring thus formed is supported against movement by disposing a relatively rigid annular casing unit adjacent the ring, with the ring lying within the casing opening, and bonding the casing element to the seal ring by molding an elastomeric collar of thin cross-section between a portion of the second surface of the ring and a part of said casing.

Hub Cap Vent Device

US Patent:
54923930, Feb 20, 1996
Filed:
Sep 15, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/306631
Inventors:
Glenn W. Peisker - Barrington IL
Dennis N. Denton - Gastonia NC
Assignee:
SKF USA Inc. - Elgin IL
International Classification:
B60B 700
US Classification:
3011081
Abstract:
A hub cap for heavy duty axles. The hub cap includes a breather vent disc made from a non-metallic material partially fused so as to permit air flow therethrough in both a grease-free and a greased condition, such vent disc being mechanically secured to a disc carrier, and the carrier being received in fluid-tight relation to the end wall portion of the hub cap body.
