US Patent:
20030035446, Feb 20, 2003
Filed:
Jul 12, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/194620
Inventors:
Giora Griffel - Tenafly NJ, US
International Classification:
H01S003/10
H01S003/08
US Classification:
372/020000, 372/099000
Abstract:
A wavelength-dependent variable mirror suitable for application in tunable semiconductor lasers is disclosed. The variable mirror comprises a coupler having two input ports and two output ports operable to distribute a known level of light coupled into a first input port, optical channels extending from each of the two coupler output ports of and a wavelength-selective device connected to each of the extended optical channels. In one aspect, the wavelength selective device connects the two extended channels forming an optical loop, which reflects a known level of light back to the coupler input ports. In another aspect, the wavelength selective device reflects a known level of light at a predetermined wavelength back to each of the extended channels to an input port of said coupler. In yet another aspect, a phase controlling element is introduced in at least one optical channel, which introduces a known amount of phase change in the light sent back to the coupler. In one application, a tunable laser is fabricated using a gain medium in conjunction with wavelength-selective variable mirror that operates to reflect a known level of light energy into a gain material to achieve lasing operation at a designated frequency.

Inventors:
Giora Griffel - Tenafly NJ, US
International Classification:
H01S005/00
H01S003/083
US Classification:
372/043000, 372/094000
Abstract:
A vertically-coupled ring resonator structures are disclosed. In one embodiment, the structure comprises a base layer having at least one or two channels wherein a top surface of the base layer is grown planarized with regard to a top surface of each the said channels and a ring resonator coupled to the base layer top surface vertically displaced from and in optical communication with the channels is operable to transfer at least one wavelength of the light between said channels. In another embodiment of the invention, a vertically-coupled ring resonator semiconductor laser is formed using a vertically-coupled ring configuration. The laser comprises a base layer having two channels operable to generate light wherein a top surface of the base layer is planarized grown with regard to a top surface of each of said channels, a first reflecting surface associated with each of the channels operable to substantially contain light within the associated channel, and a ring resonator coupled to said base layer top surface vertically displaced from and in optical communication with the channels operable to transfer at least one wavelength of the light the channels, wherein the first reflecting surface and the ring resonator define a lasing cavity. In another embodiment of the invention, two ring resonators are employed as reflecting surfaces to create a laser cavity.

Filed:
Dec 2, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/204157
Inventors:
Giora Griffel - Tenafly NJ, US
International Classification:
G02B006/26
G02B006/42
US Classification:
385/015000
Abstract:
Optical switches and modulators contain a single-mode waveguide () and at least one closed-loop resonator (). The single-mode waveguide () is optically coupled to the closed-loop resonator (), and the light propagating in the single-mode waveguide () is modulated by applying an inducing effect, e.g. optically pumping, to the closed-loop resonator () so as to vary the effective propagation loss in the closed-loop resonator. Alternatively, the optical signal propagating in the single mode waveguide () is modulated by applying an inducing effect, e.g. electro-optics, to vary the coupling between the single-mode waveguide and the closed loop resonator ().

Drip Preventing Candle Holder With Decorative Follower Providing Auxiliary Illumination

View page
US Patent:
62643452, Jul 24, 2001
Filed:
Dec 21, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/217920
Inventors:
Giora Griffel - Bergenfield NJ
Assignee:
The Candle Machine Co - Tenafly NJ
International Classification:
F21L 1900
F21V 3500
US Classification:
362161
Abstract:
A one-piece, drip preventing follower of transparent glass has an annular shoulder sitting on an upper shoulder of the candle formed with a central, wick receiving opening with a lip from which extends an outwardly and upwardly flaring portion providing a melted wax receiving bowl. A skirt depends from the annular shoulder spaced from and longer than the candle body for telescopically receiving a candlestick providing guided descent of the follower. The annular lip has an upwardly inclined, flat or convex, annular optical face providing an optical aperture aligned to receive, light refracted through the melted wax from the candle flame for transmission by total internal reflection down the entire length of the skirt, the lower end of which is coated with a suitably fluorescent material, providing a pleasing bright ring of light, both decorative and an additional source of illumination.

Giora Griffel - Bergenfield NJ
Assignee:
The Candle Machine Co. - Tenafly NJ
International Classification:

US Patent:
58791523, Mar 9, 1999
Filed:
Jun 11, 1998
Appl. No.:
/095997
Inventors:
Giora Griffel - Bergenfield NJ
International Classification:
F23D 316
F23D 318
US Classification:
431293
Abstract:
A candle holder includes a drip preventing and stabilizing cap member of transparent glass descending on the candle throughout consumption with an annular shoulder portion, a central, wick receiving aperture with a lip for melted wax and a depending skirt; a stand with a socket-less candlestick having a shallow, concave candle supporting surface receiving melted wax and receivable in the skirt to provide a wax seal; and vertical metal guide rods. In one example, the guide rods depend from a metal annulus sitting on a outwardly flared lower portion of the skirt and slide in sockets on the stand ensuring vertical descent of the cap. Alternatively, the guide rods are anchored in the foot of the stand and the sockets are in the metal annulus. In a different version, pairs of metal guide rods are anchored in opposite sides of the foot of the stand defining vertical sockets slidingly receiving rods which extend outwardly from the annulus and carry weighty knobs at free ends. Alternatively, a cap guiding ring is mounted, flag fashion, on the top of a rod upstanding from the base, in coaxial relation above the candle supporting surface, trapping the cylindrical skirt between the candle supporting surface and the guide ring, throughout burning.
