Optical Technique For Background Suppression

View page
US Patent:
40959007, Jun 20, 1978
Filed:
Aug 12, 1976
Appl. No.:
5/713749
Inventors:
Randall E. Murphy - Acton MA
George A. Vanasse - Chelmsford MA
Alva T. Stair - Concord MA
International Classification:
G01B 902
US Classification:
356106S
Abstract:
An optical technique utilized during target detection for suppressing background radiation. This optical technique incorporates therein an optical mask interposed between the background radiation containing a target and an interferometer capable of performing double-beaming in Fourier spectroscopy. The optical mask divides the field-of-view of the interferometer into a plurality of subfields-of-view, the subfields-of-view being divided into first beams of light containing the background radiation alone and second beams of light containing both the background and target radiation, thereby enabling the output of the interferometer to be in the form of an interferogram having structure due only to the target radiation.

Telescope Baffle System

View page
US Patent:
51895544, Feb 23, 1993
Filed:
Sep 30, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/771378
Inventors:
George A. Vanasse - Chelmsford MA
Ernest R. Huppi - Concord MA
Assignee:
The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Air
Force - Washington DC
International Classification:
G02B 2700
US Classification:
359601
Abstract:
A telescope baffle system is disclosed for use with optical instruments. The baffle structure consists of highly reflective low scatter annular arrays of retro-reflecting cube corners which have the capability of returning rays back upon themselves such that most off-axis radiation striking one of the baffle annular arrays is reflected back to its source rather than being absorbed or scattered by the baffle.

Apparatus For Double-Beaming In Fourier Spectroscopy

View page
US Patent:
40958990, Jun 20, 1978
Filed:
Mar 1, 1976
Appl. No.:
5/662995
Inventors:
George A. Vanasse - Chelmsford MA
Assignee:
The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Air
Force - Washington DC
International Classification:
G01B 902
US Classification:
356106S
Abstract:
A technique for performing double-beaming in Fourier spectroscopy which is capable, in a single output, of measuring the spectra of desired radiation while suppressing the spectra of unwanted radiation. This technique is accomplished by feeding a pair of input beams on opposite faces of a beamsplitter at a preselected location thereon. In this manner radiation which is common to both input beams will be suppressed in the output interferogram.

Tilt/Shear Immune Tunable Fabry-Perot Interferometer

View page
US Patent:
51628724, Nov 10, 1992
Filed:
Jul 2, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/724619
Inventors:
George A. Vanasse - Chelmsford MA
Assignee:
The United States of America as represented the secretary of the Air
Force - Washington DC
International Classification:
G01B 902
US Classification:
356352
Abstract:
A Fabry-Perot interferometer that is shear and tilt immune as well as being tunable. The basic design consists of a spherical semi-reflecting mirror and a planar array of retro-directive mirrors (referred to as phase or pseudo-phase conjugators). The focal point of the spherical mirror is located between the retro-array or phase conjugate mirror and the spherical mirror. In this configuration the Fabry-Perot is immune to tilting and shear displacement of its optical elements as well as being funable to change the optical path difference between interfering beams.
