Independent Automatic Shedding Branch Circuit Breaker

View page
US Patent:
7274974, Sep 25, 2007
Filed:
Feb 22, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/063184
Inventors:
Scott R. Brown - Wake Forest NC, US
Gary M. Kuzkin - Raleigh NC, US
Assignee:
Square D Company - Palatine IL
International Classification:
H02J 7/00
US Classification:
700295, 307 7, 307 70, 307 76
Abstract:
An independent automatic shedding system that automatically allows any combination of loads to powered under limited power availability (such as a standby power source) without overloading the generator or rewiring, while contributing to the stability of the power grid. A motorized disconnection actuation mechanism under control of a controller disconnects or recloses the contacts of a branch circuit breaker. A sensor detects the presence or absence of a power source and the type of power source, which is classified according to its type. A power source classification program is executed by the controller that interprets the sensor data and causes disconnection or reclosing of the disconnection actuation mechanism depending on a desired status (ON or OFF) of the branch circuit breaker when standby power is available. Conventional circuit protection is provided an optional advanced circuit protection such as ground or arc fault circuit interruption.

Filed:
Sep 14, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/520904
Inventors:
Barry Noel Rodgers - Raleigh NC, US
Andy Allen Haun - Raleigh NC, US
Robert Joseph Dwulet - Wake Forrest NC, US
Mark John Kocher - Raleigh NC, US
Julius Michael Liptak - Knightdale NC, US
Alexander Filippenko - Cary NC, US
Scott Robert Brown - Wake Forrest NC, US

Assignee:
Schneider Electric USA, Inc. - Palatine IL
International Classification:
G05B 11/01
US Classification:
700295, 34031011, 34031016
Abstract:
An intelligent power management system that includes a circuit breaker containing a PLC module that spans open contacts of the circuit breaker to provide a communication path for PLC messages between communication paths on each of the line and load sides of the circuit when the contacts are open. The contacts are motorized to permit remote operation through PLC messaging. Coupled to the PLC module is a controller, which controls the opening and closing of the motorized contacts under user control or via an adaptive load management algorithm that reduces peak power consumption and adapts a set of loads to changed power supply conditions. The controller can also dynamically alter operational current and fault threshold levels on a real-time basis based upon circuit requirements or environmental conditions. The algorithm runs a state machine and also manages loads in a limited power source environment such as when loads are powered by a generator.

Aerospace Power Control System For Monitoring And Reliably Transferring Power Buses

View page
US Patent:
53861477, Jan 31, 1995
Filed:
Jan 21, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/184774
Inventors:
Victor B. Bonneau - Yellow Springs OH
Gary M. Kuzkin - Oakwood OH
Robert G. Wagoner - Troy OH
John A. Overman - Huber Heights OH
Assignee:
Leland Electrosystems Inc. - Vandalia OH
International Classification:
H02J 306
H02J 906
US Classification:
307 64
Abstract:
An aerospace power control system switches an aerospace load from a faulty ac power bus to a good ac power bus of two or more ac power buses if the currently connected ac power bus is about to fail. The voltage level and frequency of the power provided on the buses are monitored to determine which of the power buses are within required limits to provide power to the aerospace load. If monitoring of the currently connected ac power bus indicates that the bus is not within the required limits and may be shut down in the immediate future, the connection of the aerospace load is switched to another ac power bus which is within the required limits. The current provided to the load is monitored to determine zero-crossing points of the current with the switch from the currently connected faulty bus to a good bus being performed at a zero-crossing point of the load current. The level of the current being provided to the aerospace load is also monitored to detect a faulty load condition. If the load current exceeds defined limits, the load will be disconnected from all ac power buses to shut down the faulty load.
