Mastodon Bones Discovered In Michigan Man's Yard

Contractor Daniel LaPoint Jr. was working in Eric Witzke's Bellevue, Mich., yard when he noticed a giant rib sticking out of the ground, according to the Lansing State Journal. Over four days in November, the two worked together to pull 42 bones out of the ground.

Michigan Man Discovers Mastodon Skeleton while digging in neighbor's backyard

dinosaur bones. However, experts from the University of Michigan identified it as the skeleton of a mastodon. These Ice Age beasts are ancestors of elephants and weigh up to five tons. Both Lapoint and Eric Witzke said the discovery was totally unexpected and they were lucky to have found the skeleton.

Neighbors dig up 42 mastodon bones in Michigan yard

LaPoint and his neighbor Eric Witzke spent four days digging up the unique find before tracking down an expert's opinion on its origins. Later this month they will donate most of them to the University of Michigan Museum of Paleontology.
