Noncontact Web Stabilizer

View page
US Patent:
8584584, Nov 19, 2013
Filed:
Feb 23, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/360294
Inventors:
Kent Dirksen Kasper - Dover NH, US
Drew Edwin Kiefaber - Newmarket NH, US
Daniel Matthew Perdue - Rochester NH, US
Assignee:
Goss International Americas, Inc. - Durham NH
International Classification:
B41F 13/56
B65H 20/00
US Classification:
101225, 101218, 226 973, 24261511
Abstract:
A noncontact web stabilizer is provided in which members located on opposite sides of a web reduce out-of-plane web vibrations. Specifically, a first member is located on one side of a web and a second member is located on the opposite side of the web. Both members are positioned so that the distance between the web and the members decrease in the direction that the web is moving, creating opposing regions of high pressure that force the web toward its nominal running position, thereby reducing out-of-plane web instability.

Abstract:
A trimmer for trimming of a book has a support for supporting the book, a trim blade for trimming an edge of the book, and a reciprocating actuator for moving the trim blade toward the book to trim the edge of the book. The trim blade has a trim blade edge having a first section and a second section, the second section being angled with respect to the first section.

Reverse Air Flow Web Stabilizer

US Patent:
20070175346, Aug 2, 2007
Filed:
Feb 2, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/345801
Inventors:
Kent Kasper - Dover NH, US
Drew Kiefaber - Newmarket NH, US
Daniel Perdue - Rochester NH, US
Assignee:
Goss International Americas, Inc. - Dover NH
International Classification:
B41F 5/04
B65H 20/14
US Classification:
101219000, 226007000, 226097300
Abstract:
A web print unit includes a first plate cylinder, a first blanket cylinder for contacting the first plate cylinder, a second blanket cylinder, and a second plate cylinder for contacting the second blanket cylinder. A web to be printed passes between the first blanket cylinder and the second blanket cylinder at a blanket to blanket location, the first and second blanket cylinders are capable of being thrown apart. An air source is located on a side of the web and oriented to blow air upstream toward the blanket to blanket location while the blanket cylinders rotate.

Apparatus For Preventing Condensation In Machines Processing A Web Of Material

View page
US Patent:
58424172, Dec 1, 1998
Filed:
Apr 25, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/427775
Inventors:
Drew E. Kiefaber - Newmarket NH
Jeffrey R. Rummler - Portsmouth NH
Assignee:
Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG - Heidelberg
International Classification:
B41L 2320
US Classification:
1014241
Abstract:
The present invention concerns an apparatus for preventing condensation in machines for processing web-like material, and in particular an apparatus for preventing condensation on the safety guard of a printing press. The apparatus includes components of a processing unit, and elements assigned to the components to maintain the surface temperature of the components above the dew point of the surrounding air.

System And Method For Measuring Untensioned Product Length Of A Web During Production

View page
US Patent:
20140331878, Nov 13, 2014
Filed:
May 9, 2013
Appl. No.:
13/890475
Inventors:
- Durham NH, US
Daniel Matthew PERDUE - Rochester NH, US
Drew Edwin KIEFABER - Newmarket NH, US
Assignee:
Goss International Americas Inc. - Durham NH
International Classification:
B41F 13/02
US Classification:
101219, 101485
Abstract:
A system and method is provided for determining an untensioned product length of a web moving through a printing press under tension. A controller determines a tensioned repeat length of the web in a span of the printing press while the web is moving through the printing press under tension; determines an elastic strain of the web in the span of the printing press while the web is moving through the printing press under tension; and calculates an untensioned product length of the web in the span of the printing press while the web is moving through the printing press under tension as a function of the tensioned repeat length and the elastic strain.

Closed-Loop Control Of Untensioned Product Length On A Web Press

View page
US Patent:
20140331880, Nov 13, 2014
Filed:
May 9, 2013
Appl. No.:
13/890485
Inventors:
- Durham NH, US
Daniel Matthew Perdue - Rochester NH, US
Drew Edwin Kiefaber - Newmarket NH, US
Assignee:
Goss International Americas Inc. - Durham NH
International Classification:
B41F 21/00
US Classification:
101481, 101485
Abstract:
A system and method is provided for closed loop control of an untensioned product length of a web moving through a printing press under tension during production. While a printing press is printing on the web, a controller receives a calculated untensioned product length L(t) of the web in the span of the printing press while the web is moving through the printing press under tension, compares L(t) to a previously stored untensioned product length setpoint L, maintains closed loop control of the untensioned product length by controlling one or more components on the printing press as a function of said comparing step, and repeats the steps receiving, comparing, maintaining and controlling over time while the printing press is printing on the web.
