Level Gage Waveguide Process Seal Having Wavelength-Based Dimensions

View page
US Patent:
58724940, Feb 16, 1999
Filed:
Jun 27, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/884536
Inventors:
Donald Palan - Chaska MN
Dennis Smith - Minnetonaka MN
Randall C. Olson - Prior Lake MN
Assignee:
Rosemount Inc. - Eden Prairie MN
International Classification:
H01P 108
G01F 23284
US Classification:
333252
Abstract:
A waveguide assembly for a process sealed level gage includes first and second waveguide portions, a process sealing cavity and a mechanical barrier. The first waveguide portion has a first waveguide bore. The second waveguide portion is fastened to the first waveguide portion and has a second waveguide bore which is axially aligned with the first waveguide bore for communicating microwave signals at a waveguide wavelength. lambda. sub. G between the waveguide bores. The process sealing cavity is formed at an interface between the first and second waveguide portions. The mechanical barrier includes a first shaft section positioned within the first waveguide portion, a second shaft section positioned within the second waveguide portion and a raised annular shoulder positioned at the interface, within the process sealing cavity. The raised annular shoulder has a width, which is measured radially outward from an outside diameter of the shaft sections, of approximately 1/2. lambda. sub. G and a height, which is measured axially between the first and second waveguide portions, of approximately 1/4. lambda. sub. G.

Barrier Device

US Patent:
57105529, Jan 20, 1998
Filed:
Jun 6, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/472695
Inventors:
Steven J. McCoy - Eden Prairie MN
Mark S. Schumacher - Minneapolis MN
John A. Kielb - Eden Prairie MN
Donald F. Palan - Chaska MN
Grant B. Edwards - Blaine MN
Randy J. Longsdorf - Chaska MN
James E. Templin - Burnsville MN
Assignee:
Rosemount Inc. - Eden Prairie MN
International Classification:
G08C 1916
US Classification:
34087021
Abstract:
A barrier device threadably mounts to a cabling aperture on a field mounted transmitter. The field mounted transmitter receives and transmits signals, and is wholly powered by a current loop circuit. The barrier device has a conductive housing with at least a first and a second aperture and a pair of conductors passing through the first aperture of the barrier device, for connecting to a terminal block in the transmitter. A pair of signal terminals, preferably as ring tongue lug, is mounted in the second aperture of the barrier device. The signal terminals are connectable to a handheld communicator, which is used to calibrate, monitor and test the transmitter. A barrier circuit is mounted in the housing and is electrically connected between the signal terminals and the conductors. Signals from the communicator access the terminal block through the barrier circuit, and the barrier circuit limits the power available at the signal terminals. One embodiment of the barrier device has a third aperture directly across from the first aperture.

Microwave Level Gauge With Remote Transducer

US Patent:
58475672, Dec 8, 1998
Filed:
Sep 30, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/315429
Inventors:
John A. Kielb - Eden Prairie MN
Randy J. Longsdorf - Chaska MN
Grant B. Edwards - Blaine MN
Donald F. Palan - Chaska MN
Assignee:
Rosemount Inc. - Eden Prairie MN
International Classification:
G01R 2704
G01F 2328
US Classification:
324642
Abstract:
A level sensor for use in a process application measures height of a product in a tank. The level meter includes a microwave feedhorn directed into the tank, an electronics housing spaced apart from the feedhorn and a microwave waveguide extending therebetween. A microwave transducer in the housing couples to the waveguide and sends and receives microwave signals. A microprocessor in the housing identifies echoes from the microwave signals which are generated and sensed by the microwave transducer. The microprocessor determines height of the product based upon a microwave echo from the product and a microwave echo from the feedhorn. The microprocessor compensates for the effect of propagation delay through the waveguide on height measurements with the feedhorn echo and provides an output related to height of the product in the tank.

Microwave Level Gauge Having An Adapter With A Thermal Barrier

View page
US Patent:
58510834, Dec 22, 1998
Filed:
Oct 4, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/726145
Inventors:
Donald F. Palan - Chaska MN
Assignee:
Rosemount Inc. - Eden Prairie MN
International Classification:
H01P 104
US Classification:
403337
Abstract:
A microwave level gauge has a flange adaptor which includes a first end for coupling to a process connecting flange and a second end for coupling to an electronics housing. The adaptor has a section of reduced cross-sectional area along its length between the first and second ends, which defines a thermal transfer restriction that restricts heat transfer from the first end to the second end. A waveguide extends through the adaptor, from the first end to the second end.

Level Gage Waveguide Transitions And Tuning Method And Apparatus

View page
US Patent:
59260807, Jul 20, 1999
Filed:
Sep 29, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/939199
Inventors:
Donald F. Palan - Chaska MN
Mark J. Gailloux - Eden Prairie MN
Assignee:
Rosemount, Inc. - Eden Prairie MN
International Classification:
H01P 108
G01F 2300
G01R 2700
US Classification:
333252
Abstract:
A waveguide for microwave radar level gages that includes a process sealed barrier in the waveguide that is impedance matched with bore transition sections of the waveguide at opposite ends thereof. The impedance matching results in positioning of the tapered end of the barrier offset from the ends of the bore transition sections.

Microwave Waveguide For Tank Level Sensors

US Patent:
58776630, Mar 2, 1999
Filed:
Sep 5, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/926294
Inventors:
Donald F. Palan - Chaska MN
Jon D. Miller - Eagan MN
Assignee:
Rosemount Inc. - Eden Prairie MN
International Classification:
H01P 108
G01F 2328
US Classification:
333252
Abstract:
A process sealed waveguide is formed in a flange mounted on a tank, and is used for transmitting microwave energy from a source of microwave energy to an aperture of an antenna on the interior of the tank. The process sealed waveguide includes a mechanical barrier to prevent escape of fluid under pressure or liquid from the interior of the tank, and also serves to reduce impedance mismatch between the air, vapor, or liquid filled waveguide or antenna apertures. The flange is mated to the microwave source through an electronic housing to flange adapter that interfaces with the flange in a manner to provide a vent in case the mechanical barrier fails so pressure is released, and to provide flame quenching if flames are present. The adapter includes a second waveguide having a process sealed mechanical barrier mounted coaxially with the mechanical barrier in the waveguide in the flange.
