Service Grant For Gsm Wireless Networks Based On Signal Strength

View page
US Patent:
7280828, Oct 9, 2007
Filed:
May 24, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/854082
Inventors:
Dipesh H. Shah - Fremont CA, US
Assignee:
Cingular Wireless II, LLC - Atlanta GA
International Classification:
H04Q 7/20
US Classification:
455434, 455 341, 455433, 455509, 455574, 455440
Abstract:
A system and method for selectively granting access to GSM wireless service based upon signal strength is provided. A base station may measure uplink signal strengths of bursts transmitted by a mobile station on a RACH, a SDCCH, or a TCH, and determine downlink signal strengths as conveyed by the mobile station on a SACCH allocated with the SDCCH or TCH. The base station is configured to compare the uplink signal strengths of the RACH, SDCCH, or TCH bursts with uplink signal thresholds to determine service access. In addition, the base station is further configured to compare the downlink signal strength of a BCCH, as reported by the mobile station on the SACCH, with downlink signal thresholds associated with the service request types conveyed by the SDCCH/TCH bursts. The base station then determines service access for a service request type based upon those comparisons.

Method And Apparatus For Providing Downlink Delay Diversity

View page
US Patent:
7813306, Oct 12, 2010
Filed:
Jan 21, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/040250
Inventors:
Dipesh Shah - Fremont CA, US
Assignee:
AT&T Mobility II LLC - Atlanta GA
International Classification:
H04B 1/56
US Classification:
370276, 370280, 370465, 370468, 370329, 370331, 455450, 455423, 455436, 455437, 455329
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for providing downlink transmit delay diversity (TDD). In accordance with the invention, a BTS includes at least one simplex transceiver (S-TRX) that does not implement downlink TDD and at least one duplex transceiver (D-TRX) that does implement TDD. In accordance with the preferred embodiment, the BTS has “N” S-TRXs and “A” D-TRXs, where N and A are positive integers and A is less than N. When downlink TDD is implemented, a total of N+A transceivers may be used (i. e. , N S-TRXs and A D-TRXs). When downlink TDD is not needed, as many as N S-TRXs may be used. When downlink TDD is not needed, typically no D-TRXs are used. Therefore, the present invention reduces the amount of resources that is required to implement downlink TDD. In addition, the present invention efficiently utilizes resources by preferably implementing downlink TDD only when it is needed.

System And Method For Constructing A Carrier To Interference Matrix Based On Subscriber Calls

View page
US Patent:
8233907, Jul 31, 2012
Filed:
Nov 3, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/979126
Inventors:
Dipesh Hasmukhlal Shah - Fremont CA, US
Assignee:
AT&T Mobility II LLC - Atlanta GA
International Classification:
H04W 40/00
US Classification:
455447, 370329
Abstract:
A conventional wireless device constantly measures the signal strength of its server base station and the strength of signals from surrounding base stations for handoff purposes. The wireless device transmits this information to its serving base station, which discards the information a short time afterward, following handoff. The present system and method store the formerly discarded information in one of several existing network elements or in a separate computer system. This information is used to generate a carrier to interference ratio, which indicates the level of interference between station pairs, and to also generate a carrier to interference matrix, including identifying potential interference for each station pair. The frequency of occurrences during predetermined desired periods of time and the volume of traffic affected by each level of interference may also be calculated. This provides comprehensive, continuous, real-time information for wireless frequency planning.

Method And System For Determining Service Metrics In A Wireless Network

View page
US Patent:
8472944, Jun 25, 2013
Filed:
Dec 13, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/636760
Inventors:
Dipesh H. Shah - Fremont CA, US
Kaushik D. Gohel - Atlanta GA, US
Assignee:
AT&T Mobility II, LLC - Atlanta GA
International Classification:
H04W 24/00
US Classification:
455424, 455423, 4554521, 455441, 4554561, 4554562
Abstract:
A method and system for determining service metrics in a communications network are disclosed. The method measures a speed of a wireless endpoint device in an ongoing call, and collects call performance data. The method deems the ongoing call as being associated with a user who is mobile if the speed of the wireless endpoint device exceeds a speed threshold at any time during the ongoing call, or as being associated with a user who is stationary if the speed of the wireless endpoint device does not exceed or is equal to the speed threshold over a call duration. The method adds the call performance data to an aggregate service metrics for mobile users if the ongoing call is deemed as being associated with a user who is mobile, or to an aggregate service metrics for stationary users if the ongoing call is deemed as being associated with a user who is stationary.

Wireless Mobile Station Call Handoff

View page
US Patent:
20060094430, May 4, 2006
Filed:
Oct 28, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/976143
Inventors:
Dipesh Shah - Fremont CA, US
International Classification:
H04Q 7/20
US Classification:
455436000
Abstract:
Communication handoff in a radio telecommunications network in which a quality measurement between a mobile wireless device and a first fixed transceiving entity in the radio telecommunications network is obtained in readiness for potentially handing off the communication. A quality driven handoff is initiated when the quality measurement falls within a range of values defined by a first quality threshold and a second quality threshold.

Precision For Interference Estimation In Unsynchronized Wireless Networks

View page
US Patent:
20060116081, Jun 1, 2006
Filed:
Aug 26, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/649448
Inventors:
Dipesh Shah - Fremont CA, US
International Classification:
H04B 17/00
H03C 1/62
US Classification:
455067110, 455226100, 455115300
Abstract:
The present invention includes systems and methods for estimating interference levels on idle channels in an unsynchronized TDMA or GSM wireless network. Each of s time slots is divided in to n distinct or overlapping segments. The interference level within each segment for each time slot is then measured and stored. In each subsequent frame in a predetermined accumulation interval T, the interference level within each segment of each time slot is measured and averaged with the measurements of the corresponding segment and corresponding time slot in previous frames. The maximum of the average interference measurements in all segments of all time slots yields increased accuracy for an interference measurement on the physical channel.

Method And Apparatus For Performing Radio Link Timer Management In A Wireless Communications Network

View page
US Patent:
20060120318, Jun 8, 2006
Filed:
Dec 6, 2004
Appl. No.:
11/005670
Inventors:
Dipesh Shah - Fremont CA, US
International Classification:
H04Q 7/20
H04Q 7/00
US Classification:
370328000
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for performing radio link timer (RLT) management in a wireless network. The method and apparatus examine the frame error rates (FERS) associated with decoded speech or data frames and determine how many speech or data frames are unacceptable. If the number of speech or data frames that is unacceptable exceeds a preset threshold value, a determination is made that the call should be released. This process is performed in both the uplink and downlink directions and determinations as to whether the call should be released are made by the mobile station (MS), the base station system (BSS) or mobile switching center (MSC) for the downlink direction and by the base station system (BSS) for the uplink direction. If a determination is made that the number of unacceptable speech or data frames exceeds the preset threshold, the call is released.
