View page
US Patent:
8086409, Dec 27, 2011
Filed:
Jan 30, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/022862
Inventors:
Dimitris Anastassiou - Tenafly NJ, US
John Watkinson - New York NY, US
Assignee:
The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York - New York NY
International Classification:
G01N 33/48
C12Q 1/68
G06G 7/58
US Classification:
702 19, 702 20, 435 6, 703 11
Abstract:
Systems and methods for selecting factors from a continuous data set of measurements are provided. The measurements include values of factors and/or outcomes. Two or more factors that are jointly associated with one or more outcomes from the data set are identified. Each of the two or more factors are analyzed to determine at least one cooperative interaction among the factors with respect to an outcome. The two or more factors can be a module of factors serving as a single factor participating in a cooperative interaction with another factor or module of factors.

Filed:
May 10, 2007
Appl. No.:
12/307694
Inventors:
Dimitris Anastassiou - Tenafly NJ, US
Vinay Varadan - Hastings-on-Hudson NY, US
Assignee:
The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York - New York NY
International Classification:
G01N 33/48
C12Q 1/68
G06F 7/60
G06G 7/58
US Classification:
702 19, 435 6, 702 20, 703 2, 703 11
Abstract:
A method is provided for selecting two or more genes from gene expression data. In the method, gene expression data for a plurality of genes is provided, where the gene expression data include expression levels for each of the plurality of genes. The gene expression data is discretized. Based on the discretized gene expression data, the synergy among the plurality of genes with respect to a phenotype, for example, presence or absence of a disease in a tissue, is evaluated. Two or more genes whose synergy exceeds a predetermined threshold are selected. A system implementing the method is also provided.

System And Method For Multiple-Factor Selection

US Patent:
8290715, Oct 16, 2012
Filed:
Jun 4, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/133045
Inventors:
Dimitris Anastassiou - Tenafly NJ, US
Vinay Varadan - Hastings-on-Hudson NY, US
Assignee:
The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York - New York NY
International Classification:
A61B 5/00
G01N 33/48
G01N 33/00
G06F 19/00
US Classification:
702 20, 600300, 702189, 708200
Abstract:
The disclosed subject matter provides techniques for multiple-factor selection. The factors can be features or elements that are jointly associated with one or more outcomes by their joint presence or absence. There may be a non-causative correlation between the factors, features, or elements and the outcomes. In some embodiments, Entropy Minimization and Boolean Parsimony (EMBP) is used to identify modules of genes jointly associated with disease from gene expression data, and a logic function is provided to connect the combined expression levels in each gene module with the presence of disease. The smallest module of genes whose joint expression levels can predict the presence of disease can be identified.

Data Compression Method For Graphics Images

View page
US Patent:
45463859, Oct 8, 1985
Filed:
Jun 30, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/509837
Inventors:
Dimitris Anastassiou - Long Island City NY
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
H04N 712
US Classification:
358133
Abstract:
Graphic images are generally considered to be those images comprised of text and/or drawings. Data compression of graphics images is desired whenever a fast image transmission speed is desired in a limited band width channel. It is also used for storage of a large number of images in a limited capacity storage system. A high compression ratio is achieved by thresholding the graphics image to a bilevel black-white image at one bit per pixel and then employing a second data compression on the black-white image. At low resolution, bilevel images have poor quality at edges and a quality improvement is needed. The data compression apparatus and method disclosed separates the graphics image into at least first and second bit planes identifies edge pixels from the first bit plane indicating a black/white change, locates the edge pixels and generates at least a single bit for each edge pixel indicating whether the edge pixel has a maximum intensity value such as black or white or an intermediate gray intensity value. Intermediate values are not allowed except at edge pixels which enhances both quality and compressibility of the resulting graphics image.
