Circuits And Methods For Controlling Load Sharing By Multiple Power Supplies

View page
US Patent:
6465909, Oct 15, 2002
Filed:
Jul 31, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/628534
Inventors:
David Henry Soo - Los Altos CA
Robert Loren Reay - Mountain View CA
Assignee:
Linear Technology Corporation - Milpitas CA
International Classification:
H02J 110
US Classification:
307 52, 307 53, 307 62
Abstract:
Circuits and methods for controlling load sharing by multiple power supplies are provided. In preferred embodiments, load share controllers utilize multiple voltage control loops to monitor the output voltages that are being provided by multiple power supplies connected to a load. These voltage control loops each generate a voltage control voltage that is proportional to the difference between the actual output voltage of the corresponding power supply and the desired output voltage. The voltage control loop with the highest voltage control voltage then controls a current control voltage generated in a current control loop for each power supply via a share bus. These current control loops then regulate the current provided by the corresponding power supplies so that those currents are all proportional to the voltage on the share bus. By monitoring the current control voltage in each current control loop, the voltage at the output of each power supply, and the direction of the current flowing between each power supply and the load, the circuits and methods of preferred embodiments of the invention can detect and account for out-of-regulation conditions, over voltage conditions, short circuit conditions, and hot-swapping conditions.

Meng Long - Milpitas CA, US
Assignee:
Chrontel, Inc. - San Jose CA
International Classification:
G09G005/02
US Classification:
345605, 345606, 345609, 345619, 345698, 382299, 382300
Abstract:
A sub-system and method to receive input image pixel amplitude data at an input pixel resolution and to output image pixel amplitude data in one or two dimensions at a higher pixel resolution includes a computer system-executable algorithm with user-programmable coefficients. The programmable coefficients are user-selectable according to the nature and quality of the input image data such that sharpness of the output image data can be at least partially tailored to the image.

Circuitry To Prevent Overvoltage Of Circuit Systems

View page
US Patent:
8619400, Dec 31, 2013
Filed:
Mar 19, 2012
Appl. No.:
13/424116
Inventors:
Robert Curtis Dobkin - Monte Sereno CA, US
David Henry Soo - Los Altos CA, US
Assignee:
Linear Technology Corporation - Milpitas CA
International Classification:
H02H 9/04
US Classification:
361 911
Abstract:
An overvoltage protection method and circuit includes a positive supply input node, an output node, and a negative supply node. The overvoltage protection circuit further includes a first functional circuit configured to turn ON a MOSFET and maintain it in a low resistance state. A second functional circuit is configured to detect an overvoltage and control the gate of the MOSFET to regulate a voltage at the output node. A third functional circuit is configured to provide a startup wherein the overvoltage protection circuit is not damaged and/or to regulate an operating voltage such that an overvoltage does not appear on the overvoltage protection circuit. The external components include the MOSFET, which has a gate coupled to the output of the charge pump of the overvoltage protection circuit.

Method And System For Voltage Independent Power Supply Load Sharing

View page
US Patent:
20100164289, Jul 1, 2010
Filed:
Dec 22, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/645341
Inventors:
Christopher Bruce UMMINGER - Mountain View CA, US
David Henry Soo - Los Altos CA, US
Mitchell Edward Lee - San Jose CA, US
Pinkesh Sachdev - Santa Clara CA, US
Zhipeng Li - Cambridge MA, US
International Classification:
H02J 1/10
US Classification:
307 55
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for load sharing among N current supplies, where N>1. N current supply paths are coupled to corresponding N independent power sources, respectively. A system load is coupled to the outputs of the N current supply paths to receive N current supplies. There is a common current share bus configured to connect to the N current supply paths to provide a common current share signal, used to indicate the current contribution needed from each of the N current supply paths. In this configuration, each of the N current supply paths adjusts an adjustable voltage drop between its power source and the current supply it provides to the system load in accordance with the common current share signal so that the current supplied from each current supply path is consistent with the common current share signal.

Method And Apparatus For On-The-Fly Multiple Display Mode Switching In High-Resolution Bitmapped Graphics System

View page
US Patent:
54733421, Dec 5, 1995
Filed:
Oct 19, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/138954
Inventors:
Lawrence T. Tse - Fremont CA
Tat C. Choi - Milpitas CA
David C. Soo - Fremont CA
Assignee:
Chrontel, Inc. - San Jose CA
International Classification:
G09G 102
US Classification:
345132
Abstract:
A RAMDAC circuit drives a display device so as display multiple modes of color depth and display resolution in a single display frame without sacrificing resolution of the higher-resolution mode, and adjusts the output pixel rate to match that of the display mode being display on a pixel-by-pixel basis. The RAMDAC circuit switches between two graphics modes on-the-fly on a pixel-by-pixel basis in accordance with mode control bits stored in the pixel data. Furthermore, the RAMDAC circuit switches between two output pixel rates such that the amount of video memory used for any predefined screen area remains constant even though the output pixel rate and resolution are dynamically adjusted. In a preferred embodiment a display mode signal is embedded in the display data such that the display data, including the mode signal, comprises one byte of data for each display pixel when the mode signal specifies the first display mode, and comprises two bytes of data for each display pixel when the mode signal specifies the second display mode.
