Electrophoretic Leak Sealing System

View page
US Patent:
49503740, Aug 21, 1990
Filed:
Feb 14, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/311177
Inventors:
Glenn T. Darilek - San Antonio TX
Daren L. Laine - San Antonio TX
Assignee:
Southwest Research Institute - San Antonio TX
International Classification:
C25D 1302
C25D 1312
US Classification:
2041802
Abstract:
A system for sealing leaks in a nonconductive liner of a container of liquid or liquid-solid material. A voltage is impressed between an electrode in the material inside the container and an electrode in conductive material outside the liner. The system provides for a current path between these electrodes through any leaks that may exist in the liner. Solid particles suspended in the liquid in the impoundment accumulate at the leak as a result of electrophoresis, thereby sealing the leak. Although the system is especially useful for impounded waste materials, such as a landfill or surface impoundment, it may be used for many other types of containers.

Methods For Detecting And Locating Leaks In Containment Facilities Using Electrical Potential Data And Electrical Resistance Tomographic Imaging Techniques

US Patent:
56614063, Aug 26, 1997
Filed:
Sep 27, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/534620
Inventors:
William D. Daily - Livermore CA
Daren L. Laine - San Antonio TX
Edwin F. Laine - Alamo CA
Assignee:
Leak Location Services, Inc. - San Antonio TX
International Classification:
G01R 2708
G01N 2700
G08B 2100
US Classification:
324713
Abstract:
Methods are provided for detecting and locating leaks in liners used as barriers in the construction of landfills, surface impoundments, water reservoirs, tanks, and the like. Electrodes are placed in the ground around the periphery of the facility, in the leak detection zone located between two liners if present, and/or within the containment facility. Electrical resistivity data is collected using these electrodes. This data is used to map the electrical resistivity distribution beneath the containment liner between two liners in a double-lined facility. In an alternative embodiment, an electrode placed within the lined facility is driven to an electrical potential with respect to another electrode placed at a distance from the lined facility (mise-a-la-masse). Voltage differences are then measured between various combinations of additional electrodes placed in the soil on the periphery of the facility, the leak detection zone, or within the facility. A leak of liquid though the liner material will result in an electrical potential distribution that can be measured at the electrodes.
