Targeting Online Ads By Grouping And Mapping User Properties

View page
US Patent:
8423558, Apr 16, 2013
Filed:
Feb 5, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/701049
Inventors:
Jonathan Kilroy - Champaign IL, US
Dale Nussel - Mahomet IL, US
Allie K. Watfa - Urbana IL, US
Assignee:
Yahoo! Inc. - Sunnyvale CA
International Classification:
G06F 17/30
US Classification:
707749, 705 1449
Abstract:
A method and a system are provided for targeting online ads by grouping and mapping user properties. In one example, the system receives user data associated with one or more users. The system identifies user properties for a user. The system eliminates unacceptable user properties associated with the user. The system identifies permutations of the user properties associated with the user. The system eliminates unacceptable permutations of the user properties associated with the user. Valid permutations remain. The system attaches a weight of importance to each valid permutation. A weight quantifies a level of importance of a valid permutation for the user with respect to buckets. A bucket is an ad category. The system grades each valid permutation relative to a bucket. The system calculates a final grade for each bucket.

Filed:
Apr 22, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/092589
Inventors:
Anupam Seth - Urbana IL, US
Allie K. Watfa - Urbana IL, US
Dale Nussel - Mahomet IL, US
Jonathan Kilroy - Champaign IL, US
Assignee:
Yahoo! Inc. - Sunnyvale CA
International Classification:

Using Spam And User Actions To Infer Advertisements

View page
US Patent:
20100070372, Mar 18, 2010
Filed:
Sep 17, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/212618
Inventors:
Allie K. Watfa - Urbana IL, US
Dale Nussel - Mahomet IL, US
Assignee:
Yahoo! Inc. - Sunnyvale CA
International Classification:
G06Q 30/00
US Classification:
705 1468
Abstract:
Embodiments are directed towards selecting for display at a client device focused advertisements within a mail message client based on a user's categorization of mail messages, including spam messages. Messages may be classified by a message classifier and placed into different message folders. Actions of the message recipient on the received messages are then monitored and used to determine a spam advertisement factor. If the spam advertisement factor exceeds a threshold for a given message, then the given message may be further examined to determine a focus of the message. The focus may then be used to select an advertisement for display to the recipient.

Commercial Incentive Presentation System And Method

View page
US Patent:
20100100417, Apr 22, 2010
Filed:
Oct 20, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/254213
Inventors:
Dale A. Nussel - Mahomet IL, US
Allie K. Watfa - Urbana IL, US
Assignee:
YAHOO! INC. - Sunnyvale CA
International Classification:
G06Q 30/00
G06F 17/30
G06Q 10/00
US Classification:
705 10, 705 1423
Abstract:
A system and method is described that tracks the behavior of a user interacting with an information retrieval system, such as an Internet search engine, and selectively determines whether or not to present a commercial incentive to the user based on the tracked behavior. The system and method may limit the number of times that a commercial incentive is presented to an eligible user, thereby creating a strong incentive for the user to utilize the commercial incentive. The system and method may also assess a level of interest of the user in subject matter associated with the commercial incentive based on the tracked behavior and dynamically determine one or more terms of the commercial incentive based on the assessment.

View page
US Patent:
20100313139, Dec 9, 2010
Filed:
Jun 3, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/477815
Inventors:
Allie K. Watfa - Urbana IL, US
Dale Nussel - Mahomet IL, US
International Classification:
G06F 3/01
G06F 17/30
US Classification:
715745, 707E17005
Abstract:
A binary interest vector is herein described, which represents information in a string of bits about user interest in a set of topics. The binary interest vector may represent the interests of a particular user, or the interests of users associated with a particular client machine. Such a binary interest vector can store a large amount of information in a very small space by assigning bit subsets of the string of bits to represent interest in respective topics of the set of topics based on the positions of the bits in the subsets. Additionally, the bits of a particular binary interest vector may include a version indicator identifying the pattern of topics assigned to the bits of the particular vector. The user interest information in a particular binary interest vector may be utilized in selecting content to display to the user that is associated with the particular vector.

A system for serving an advertisement in a networked environment receives data that defines a user selection of an image. The system also selects an advertisement associated with the user selection and communicates the selected advertisement to the user. The data that defines the user selection includes an x selection coordinate, a y selection coordinate, a width, and a height that defines a region of an image. The user selection defines also defines a scene of a video. The system also includes circuitry and logic configured to extract text and to detect objects from an image region defined by the user selection and to select an advertisement associated with any extracted text and/or detected object.
