Optical Add/Drop Apparatus And The Method For Making The Same

View page
US Patent:
6894846, May 17, 2005
Filed:
Oct 30, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/698176
Inventors:
Chun He - Fremont CA, US
Steven Zhu - Fremont CA, US
Assignee:
Alliance Fiber Optic Products - Sunnyvale CA
International Classification:
G02B013/00
US Classification:
359722, 359653
Abstract:
New designs of optical devices, particularly for adding or dropping a selected wavelength or a group of wavelengths are disclosed. In one embodiment, an optical filter is positioned a distance from a first lens to form an assembly with a mechanical axis. The optical filter is configured at a selected wavelength and reflecting light beams at wavelengths other than the selected wavelength and transmitting a light beam at the selected wavelength. The distance is obtained with respect to a reflection measurement of a light beam at a wavelength other than the selected wavelength such that the reflection measurement is minimized. A second lens is initially positioned towards the optical filter. Before being fixed with respect to the assembly, the second lens is laterally shifted from the mechanical axis of the assembly to collect with a minimum loss a light beam refracted from the assembly. Such lateral shift also benefits when a light beam comes out from the second lens.

Aug 14, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/640888
Inventors:
Xinzhong Wang - Milpitas CA, US
Chun He - Fremont CA, US
Yao Li - Fremont CA, US
Assignee:
Alliance Fiber Optic Products, Inc. - Sunnyvale CA
International Classification:
G02B006/35
H04B010/08
US Classification:
385 18, 385 16, 398 19
Abstract:
Techniques for controlling and monitoring MEMS optical switches are disclosed. In one embodiment, an electronic feedback loop is employed to determine a control signal to a MEMS switch actuator in accordance with an instruction. The control signal is so determined in such a way that the switching statuses are maximally guaranteed. To generate an appropriate control signal, AC or DC impedances of the MEMS switch are detected and used to configure the control signal to drive the switch. When it is detected that the impedance changes do not meet respective thresholds, the control signal is adjusted. In the case that the stiction happens, the switch actuator is overcharged, discharged and repeatedly applied for a limited time to overcome the stiction.

Method And Apparatus For Separating Channel Signals

View page
US Patent:
7013069, Mar 14, 2006
Filed:
Jul 6, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/885252
Inventors:
Chun He - Fremont CA, US
Yao Li - Fremont CA, US
Andy Zhou - Fremont CA, US
Assignee:
Alliance Fiber Optic Products, Inc. - Sunnyvale CA
International Classification:
G02B 6/32
G02B 6/42
US Classification:
385 47, 385 33, 385 93, 398139
Abstract:
Designs of optical devices particularly useful for separating channels signals that are originally multiplexed are disclosed. In accordance with one design, an optical filter configured to reflect a particular channel signal is positioned to receive a multiplexed signal at a small incident angle so as to minimize residuals of other signals in the channel signal. To further increase isolation from the other channel signals, another filter is introduced to transmit only the reflected channel signal, the another filter has a frequency response reciprocal to that of the original optical filter. One of the key advantages, benefits and objects of the designs is to increase channel signals separation efficiency by increasing isolation among separated channel signals.

Cost-Effective Packaging Of Fiber Optical Devices

US Patent:
7103246, Sep 5, 2006
Filed:
Aug 7, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/913938
Inventors:
Steven Zhu - Fremont CA, US
Chun He - Fremont CA, US
Yao Li - Fremont CA, US
Assignee:
Alliance Fiber Optic Products, Inc. - Sunnyvale CA
International Classification:
G02B 6/32
US Classification:
385 34, 385 33
Abstract:
Techniques for designing optical couplers are disclosed. According to one aspect of the optical couplers, different from the prior art couplers, a holding tube (a sub-assembly) for holding an optical lens (e. g. , a GRIN lens) and an optical filter (e. g. , a thin film filter) is formed by concatenating two single tubes, one for accommodating the optical lens and the other for accommodating the optical filter. The two tubes are not required to have an identical dimension. As a result, inherent flexibilities are provided in the holding tube, especially the optical filter often comes in different sizes. Further, when the sub-assembly is inserted in a sleeve, only either one of the two tubes is secured to the sleeve so as to reduce a risk that, during a thermal condition change, any metal and glass material expansion will not cause the sub-assembly to be under stress that would otherwise be present when both of the tubes are secured to the sleeve. To reduce stress-related optical loss of the optical couplers, an epoxy adhesive is applied onto only a portion of an optical lens and a portion of a tube.

Compact Wavelength Multiplexer/Demultiplexer And Method For Making The Same

US Patent:
7212343, May 1, 2007
Filed:
Jul 11, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/618272
Inventors:
Chun He - Fremont CA, US
Yao Li - Fremont CA, US
Assignee:
Alliance Fiber Optic Products, Inc. - Sunnyvale CA
International Classification:
G02B 27/10
US Classification:
359618, 359619
Abstract:
Designs of multiplexing/demultiplexing modules configured for N channels are disclosed. One of the features in the designs is to provide at least one concave mirror for compenstating filter tilting errors. The concave mirrors is placed where an incident traveling distance of a light beam is substantially similar or equal to the reflected traveling distance of the beam such that the filter tilting errors successively introduced over a number of optical filters can be successively reduced, compensated or removed over a subsequent number of optical filters as the light beams travels.

Solder-Free Packaging For Integrated Fiber Optics Device

Filed:
May 12, 2005
Appl. No.:

Inventors:
Chun He - Fremont CA, US
Steven Zhu - Fremont CA, US
Chuying Chen - Fremont CA, US
International Classification:
G02B 6/36
US Classification:

According to one aspect of the techniques, the optical device is packaged in a piece of tubing and the opto-electrical conversion device is packaged in a TO-can. While the optical device and the opto-electrical conversion device are coaxially aligned, the tube and the TO-can are integrated by a certain amount of epoxy that is later cured by a UV light or heat. As a result, an integrated optical device is formed and enjoys features of small footprint, better alignment, enhanced impact performance, lower cost in addition to easier manufacturing process and environmental-safe.
